If your child was essentially given the choice to play his/her choice sport on either the JV or Varsity team (yes, both coaches offered a position), but would essentially be the "star" of the JV team and the "sub" on the Varsity team, which would you likely choose/recommend/encourage?
Other info that might be helpful: ** The child is younger than almost all of the other children who will be on the Varsity team, but would be one of the older group on the JV team. ** The child has a challenging course load in school, but has always done well balancing sports and academics. ** The child also plays an instrument, but not on an elite/competitive level. ** The time commitment is essentially the same regardless of the team. ** Some of the other children on the Varsity team are ones with whom the child has been playing the sport for several years (on a club/travel team), so the child would know others. The child does not know anyone else on the JV team, but it might be a good opportunity to meet new people. Thank you for your thoughts. They are much appreciated.

Varsity. I would want the experience of playing for the varsity coach.
I have never heard of such an offer. In our school JV and Varsity are one program the head coach decides where you play. |
| This is a decision I would step back from and let my child make without my recommendation/encouragment. There's no clearly better choice, so I'd let my child decide which appealed more. |
| You go varsity. Done. |
This. |
That's the way it worked in DS's school. FWIW, he played Varsity as a freshman. Was pulled up early in the season. Practiced with varsity almost all season. With most sports--at least at our school--varsity and jv practiced at same time on same or adjoining fields. I've never heard of having a choice. Head coach rules the roost. |
on Varsity, so give your child the choice. They have been given the choice! Don't impede the decision. A couple of thoughts~ not every coach thinks every player is good every year. It could be the Varsity offer wouldn't be there next year, especially if it's turned down. Or a new coach comes in. Only time I would discourage Varsity is when there is a wide age/class spread. Not always good to have a younger girl alone mixing socially with much older girls. The social influence may not be age appropriate - and driving. For me this was an issue. DD could not ride w/teenagers driving. Coach often forgot this (or thought it was stupid? who knows) Coach didn't consider this. |
Well gee, since you never heard of an offer like this, it must mean only one thing. OP is a troll! Nice try, OP, you little troll. Thank goodness you can't get past posters like 17:59. |
| What grade? Seems kind of odd. Usually Varsity coaches selections trump JV coaches. Let DC decide but if he/she wants to play varsity eventually best to go with varsity now. Our experience was that there is significantly more skill improvement on varsity. Even if DC doesn't play much their first year they are still practicing with and learning from higher skilled athletes and coaches. |
I promise this is not a troll post.
Two different coaches are involved here. While it seems Varsity would "trump" JV, the reality that the child would be primarily playing as a "sub" is what is delaying the decision. |

My son was given the choice his Freshman year, he... Of course chose Varsity against my recommendation and it sucked.
1. He thought he would learn more practicing with Varsity, but most HS coaches suck compared to club coaches. 2. Varsity has much older kids who smoke pot and drink, so your kids social group is age inappropriate. OTOH 3. Kids that play JV don't know what they are doing and your child will have a higher chance of injury. |
| HS sports don't matter. Club matters. Let him choose. |
What grade is your DC? Would they be a sub this year but in line to play more in future years? What sport? |
| Sophomore. |
| How many kids do they roster for varsity and how many play at one time? So if it is soccer where only 11 play, some high schools roster way over 20 kids for varsity so many varsity players never get to play in a game. What's the point of being on varsity. I would rather my kid play JV and be a starter. |
