does he need to wait TILL November to take behind the wheel?
I know he needs to wait 9 months to get his DL but can he get behind the wheel before? he already took the classroom part

No, in DC, once he has his permit, he can start driving (not past 9 pm) with a licensed driver over 21 in the car. He can take the test 6 months after getting his permit. I think there's a number of hours driving requirement too. Check the DMV website.

The entire purpose of the learners' permit is to allow him to have some practice time driving on the roads with a licensed adult in the car monitoring him and giving him instructions. He is not allowed to drive without a licensed adult in the car with him.

Assuming that you live in Maryland he can take his behind-the-wheels as long as he holds a learners permit.

A tip. Don't bunch them together just to get them out of the way. Space them out and especially schedule the third with two weeks to go before the test.

You need to get the 6 hours of behind the wheel lessons done before he can take his driver's license test.

It is one of the requirements plus the 30 hour class.

If you are in Virginia, the last day of Behind the Wheel is the driver's test. It is best to do Behind the Wheel after he has done the 45 hours of driving with you (15 of which are at night- that is the one that was harder for us to accumulate) AND 9 months after he received his permit. That way they can give you the temporary license then and there and you don't have to track them down in a few months. You and your DC have to go the the Judge on the date the state sets to get the permanent one- 6-9 weeks after. You don't get to choose the court date it is sent to you- you can defer once - before it becomes a hassle.
