Help! Raw ground beef in crockpot for chili?!?!

Anonymous
Hubby was trying to be helpful prepping dinner for tonight and threw raw beef, pepper onions tomatoes etc and spices into the crockpot. I know you're supposed to brown the meat first but he didn't realize. It's too late to take it out bc we are both out for work. Should we eat this tonight? Will we get sick? It will cook for 7+ hours at least.

You won't get sick, it will just taste kind of gross.

You will be fine. Most people don't brown the meat before putting it in the crockpot. It's going to cook for hours.

It'll cook all the way through, don't worry. It would taste better if it was browned first, but it's safe. People put raw meat in the crockpot all the time!

+1 Also, will probably be sort of "blah" looking when not browned.

If it hasn't been in the crock pot long I would just take it out and brown it, drain the fat and pop it right back into the crock pot, no biggie. If it's been cooking for a while I would just let it continue. Hopefully it is lean ground beef!

They're both at work now.

So they are. I didn't read carefully enough. Hopefully it is lean ground beef.

That's going to be some FATTY chili. One of the main reasons you brown the beef is to drain all the fat.

What was the fat % on the beef, OP?

I'm not sure I'd eat that, TBH. Maybe if it was really lean beef to begin with.

If there's enough liquid in the chili, maybe they can skim it off the top?

You won't die, it'll be fully cooked.

They could put it in containers and pop it in the fridge. Let it cool, the fat will rise to the top and they will have dinner ready for tomorrow night.

Tonight order Chinese?

It will be fine. It will just have a different texture. Similar to taco bell meat.

OP, be sure to try to scoop off fat that'll rise to the top.

I would honestly not eat it. That's going to be kinda gross. Sorry OP. DH is in charge of making eggs for dinner or something easy.
