| I think it just hit me that all my DD's friends are chatting about and exchanging information on their sports bras, tanks (that are meant to take the place of a bra).. bra, bra, bra! They seem obsessed. They are 9 years old and I guess they all ate the same piece of pie or something. In any case, do you all find this is totally normal and usual for 9 year old girls? |
| wow, no. My DD is 10 and the girls in her class are still not into this. |
| My fourth grader just turned nine and most of her friends are at least 9 1/2, but only a few are wearing those sports bras, and I would say those few do need them. My girl is a few years away from that, I'd guess. Her older sister started wearing a sort of half-cami at about 10 1/2; not for support but for comfort and coverage. |

I remember that about half of the girls in my 4th grade class had sport bras, back in the 80s. By 5th grade, we all did (whether we needed them or not).
I remember the painful tenderness that preceded growth of real breast tissue, and the agony of being accidentally bumped in that area when I was about 9/10. Maybe that is the reason for the sport bras at that age? |
| My DD started asking at 8 because they all changed into their gym uniforms in front of each other and the other girls had sports bras. |
| Well, those little numbs can be tender, so a sport tank might not be a bad idea. |
| I wouldn't say they discuss it all the time, but yes they all wear something by the time they hit 5th grade. |
|
Oh my. My 1st grader is desperate for a bra! Her friends wear sports bras to lacrosse and they actually make a size 6 at old navy.
My kid won't have a chest for another few years, but I'm sure she'll have a sports bra by next spring. She will be buying it with her own money at this point! Question is whether she will just wear for sports or for everything... |
| Yes |
| Good god, no. I have a 5th grader. She's on the petite side and flat chested. Some of her friends are wearing them but she flat out refuses. |
|
My 9YO, soon to be 10YO DD does not wear any type of bra. Tank tops, sometimes, but no need as of yet.
I don't like to see (and I say this as a mom of two daughters and not in creepy way) prepubescent girls who need a bra or maybe even another layer like a tank go without. Some girls at this age need support or maybe just coverage. If this applies, then yes, bra. |
| Some of the girls in my DS's 5th grade class could use a bra. Not sure why their parents aren't taking care of that... |
| No. Dd is 12.5 and only even wears a sports bra sporadically depending on how thick her shirt is. She and her friends don't talk about it, really. |
| 12.5 really?? Some ok, but ?? |
Huh? Speak clearly. |
