Do all 9-year-old girls wear things under their shirts? No.
My current 12-year-old's experience: in 4th and 5th grade (elementary school), mostly the girls with breast development. In 6th grade (middle school), every girl. Which actually parallels my experience in 1980, except that the transition from some girls to all girls was in 7th grade, because that's when junior high school started. Also, "sports bras" don't do a thing for the tenderness of breast buds. They are a layer of knit cotton, not armor. |
| DD is 10 an din 5th grade. She occasionally wears a stretch cami because she likes them, and they go with certain outfits, like mesh tops, or under a shirt she wants to leave unbuttoned. But, she has no need of a bra. Some of her friends are developing, and the seem to wear camisoles. But no, most of her friends are not wearing bras or camis regularly, nor are they discussing it as far as I know. |
This exactly. It's not until the girls have to start changing for gym that most girls wear something. Otherwise, just the ones that need it. |
|
From about the age of 7 my dd was wearing cami's Then age 9 moved onto training bras with a little padding when
she started budding which helped with the tenderness then soon out grew them and moved onto real bras. I noticed when she has friends over for sleep overs they all wear bras and she tells me two of her friends have already started having periods! They're only 10. |

No, they don't. And not many 5th grade girls either in my child's class! |
| I think by that age they should be wearing some form of coverage in the chest area wether it's a cami, bra or sports bra as some girls begin to get the first signs of breast development by 8-9yrs. |
A shirt, for example? |
| Of course a shirt, but when they begin to get noticeable budding then it's time for more than just a shirt. |
| My 9yr old keeps asking if she can have a bra so I'm looking into the different options available. |
Why? |
| I know if my daughter was begining to a get noticeable chest she would want to have extra coverage especially when getting changed during P.E and just for general modesty. |
| Not all girls, It depends on how developed they are and not how old. |
But many girls (in our school most girls) are not developing at the age of 8 or 9. So, there is no need for this extra coverage. It has nothing to do with age, and everything to do with development. |
| Not all. But I don't see why not if that's what they want. |
| My daughter is 9. Justice clothing is very popular in her elementary school. A lot of the shirts are thin and see thru in certain light. When she wears those shirts she has to wear a tank, cami or sports bra even though she doesn't need it w/ thicker tee shirts. |
