Thoughts on Fairfax HS??

Anonymous
We currently live in Oakton but are considering a new build in Fairfax to accommodate my MIL. Prices are a lot cheaper in the Fairfax Hs district but I keep hearing good things only about Woodson. I know US News ranks Woodson higher, but do others have thoughts and experiences to share. How much would you factor this in for a house search? Our child is 7 months old only but this would be our forever house. Thanks!

Is this a parody?

Nope. Not a parody. It's a big investment decision for us. Is it the age of our child that's making you shake your head or ...?

Good, solid school with plenty of AP courses. More diversity than Woodson and less of a reputation for stress. The schools are in better condition than some schools in FCPS because City of Fairfax owns and invests in them even though FCPS operates them. Note that if you are in the western part of the Fairfax HS boundary that is in the county, rather than the city, you could get redistricted eventually.

Basically what the PP just said. If you have a motivated kid, there are plenty of challenging opportunities as well as the Fairfax Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. Two of my older kids go there right now-the first time since they've been in the city district since starting aap in third grade-and are as pleased as teenager can be about their school. Are you curious about the elementary and middle as well?

If you search this board, there are many negative reviews of Fairfax HS. I am surprised at the good ones above because the majority are not.

That is not my read of the prior reviews. It seemed like there was one poster with no personal connection to the school intent on scaring people away from Fairfax HS. Others pointed out that, at least as of a few years ago, it had higher test scores than all but one high school in each of Loudoun and Arlington Counties.

It's a good, solid school. No complaints.

I like their auditorium . Our dance studio was there for nutcracker a couple years ago.

People on this board are crazy. It's basically Langley or bust for most of them (ok, or TJ)

I think we have a lot of solid, above average HS choices in fairfax county. Fairfax HS is middle of the pack here, and there is no reason to be worried about it.

And don't forget Marshall.

You do realize that you could always be redistricted?

If you live in the city of Fairfax, by law you will always attend Fairfax HS. It is only the western part of the attendance area in Fairfax County that might be redistricted in the future.

We live in City of Fairfax. DS is 6. I firmly believe that by the time he heads to FHS, it will no longer be the Rebels. Woodson is the Cavaliers, another Confederate reference, that doesn't bother you too?

They could just change their mascot to James Dean and still be Rebels.
