Kid can't sign up for the evening session for the one evening of session 2? |
No, without going into too much detail, the conflict is in a different time zone and not in a place where kid could stop and do a synchronous zoom. Like a group overnight hiking/camping situation. |
| I wish they would update the site with the list of high schools so I could see if it is doable for my kid. |

Today my kid’s counselor refused to let them take health over the summer. The counselor apparently said, “No, you’re not doing that because it isn’t free. That would cost $700.”
So tired of emailing MCPS to call them out for being incompetent. |
What?! How is that up to the counselor to decide? |
Its actually a sliding scale - did you email them and say you are ok paying? |
I need my blood pressure to return to normal before I email the counselor. It’s been a long year with this school and their missteps. |

There's a bit more information posted on the site now. Looks like the virtual classes (health and tech) meet every day M-Th of the sessions, for 9 total classes of 1.5 hours each (13.5 hours total). This is a change from previous years, where they met for 8 sessions over ~3 weeks (note every day) for 1.25 hours each time (10 hours total). And all the virtual sessions are in the evening, starting at 7:15 PM.
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/extendedhours/summerschool/central-high-school-summer-school-program/ They still don't have the locations for in-person posted, but that also looks like 9 days also (M-Th) from 8-2:30 each day. |
| I was told by the math teacher that if my kid cannot take one session only. It must be 2 sessions. Otherwise he would start the class all over again in 9th grade. Is that right? Can he take health just the first session and do the second session next summer? |
Yes, you can split health over 2 summers. |
Thanks! I think meeting more frequently for the virtual is a good thing. |
You need to call out this horrible counselor. |
The worst part is that this counselor is the head of the department! |
This is a lot of change. Last summer there was a daytime virtual option. And students could take two courses per session. Now only one. I’m glad we weren’t counting on getting that accomplished but this is all a bit limiting. |
Two virtual classes in one session? Given how much outside work there is for each, that does not seem wise. I imagine very few kids did that successfully. |
