Just do 2 nights/3 days at whatever Delaware or Maryland Beach you pick, get somewhere with a fridge and do sandwiches or pre-made salads for some meals. And research restaurants a bit more before you go.
We like Fenwick Island and the North end of Ocean City because the beaches are less crowded but there are restaurants and go kart and mini golf places. |

This whining makes me laugh. I've been going to Rehoboth my entire life and I remember when the drive took *much* longer with toll collection at the toll booths at the bridge (and less developed highways and infrastructure, etc). It improved when EZ pass came along at the bridge, then even better when they got rid of the toll booths entirely. The delays at the bridge when I was a kid were brutal. Also the food/restaurant scene in Rehoboth has evolved dramatically for the better over the decades. Anyway, it rarely takes me longer than 3 hrs. Mostly 2:30-2:45 (and faster in the off season). I go there year-round (family house). Yes, it makes sense to avoid the true peak times, but going at "odd hours" is not required. "from anywhere in the DMV worth living" - you sound insufferable. |

Busch Gardens/Water Country/VA Beach Aquarium are going to be your best options for the non-beach activities (but near a beach) that you are looking for. You may just have to put up with the sand at Virginia Beach. I don't understand why you think it's boring there. It's a beach - you are supposed to play in the water and sand and read a book. You can do that at any beach.
Some people just aren't beach people. Like my MIL. She just kept asking "so what are we going to do?" while we are all hanging out on the beach. I said, "you're looking at it. this is what we do. it's the whole point." She usually takes a long beach walk and then declares she's going back to the rental house. She cannot just sit there and enjoy herself. |

DP. There are multiple grammatical errors. First of all, "places" is plural so you should be using "are" instead of "is." Second of all, PP is correct that you would use "fewer" instead of "less" in this situation. The correct sentence would read "There are fewer places to eat there." Agree but for someone like OP the drive may be worth it. It is a great destination if you want some beach but also want other options. |
