Did you find Switzerland boring?

Would love to travel by train from Geneva and avoid airports. Don't mind staying within Switzerland, or traveling to France or Italy. Really trying to stay away from the big cities since it is the height of tourist season.

I do like exploring little villages, eating good meals, and would love to be able to rent a bike for a day or two.

Any suggestions?

Annecy is a great option from there. Bus is easy and the fastest way- Flixbus probably the simplest, should be 45-60 minutes. There is a pretty commuter train now running, but it takes a pretty roundabout route and thus takes 90 minutes- the Leman Express.

Once in Annecy the main part of the city is small and easily walkable. Can rent bikes and ride everywhere, and going down either side of the lake is your best option. Lots of nice places to hang out in Annecy itself, or bike to one of the towns along the lake. Bring bathing suits (and towels if you can), there are some beaches along the lake and it will be warm enough to swim. There are probably some transit options to go up the mountains also, but not quite sure about those, have driven up when in that area.

Thank you! Does Annecy area have enough to do to spend 5 days?

If you rented a car for some of that time and went up into the mountains, yes absolutely. If you just stay at lake level, 5 days may be a bit too long. We spent a week there with a car and had a great time, that included 2 days mostly beach/lake. 1 day mostly in the city, 2 days mostly up in the mountains, and one where we went out to some of the sites in the region like the "Gorges Du Fier".

Good grief aren't you the least bit curious? Spend a day or two in Annoy then hit Chamonix and a million other spots nearby that have lots to see and do...

Go in to see the rest of Switzerland! It’s not boring at all. It’s gorgeous and full of adventure and our kids loved it.

Geneva is fantastic for shopping. Specifically, buying a watch...

Yeah exactly that's why having a car there would be good. Rental cars on the French side are not as expensive as in Switzerland, we got one for around $50/day.

The only boring thing here are posters like this one. Snooze.

No, though I love the mountains much more than Bern or Zurich.

The Bernese Oberland is stunning. If you get bored in Geneva, go to Annecy (nearby in France).

No car necessary. Trains, boats and postal buses work great. I think kid's tickets are half price.

Take boat to Lausanne from Geneva.

If you go to the mountains, check this interesting open air museum out (you take a boat there, and spend the whole day):

Why post this ?

You really need a hobby.

This must be "sophistication" mom.

Chamonix is close and incredible. Bernese Oberland also not far and a bucket list item. Cities are boring. Lucerne is worth an afternoon walk and maybe a short cruise on the lake. Im sure zurich is worth a day or two but I haven’t been there, always just pass by it or in and out through the airport.

Do you have any recommendations for Chamonix or the French Alps, particularly in summer with kids? Considering it for a family vacation b/c it's cheaper than Switzerland.

I think it is.
I can’t even plan a trip there.

I love watching mountains but I can only watch so much. I don’t like hiking, I get cold easily. I don’t like to look at castle. After ten of them, they look the same to me. I am more of a beach person. My ideal vacation would be beach diving, swimming, spa, shopping eating. Rinse and repeat.
I also enjoy traveling to china and India. India I love rural area, pilgrimage to Buddhist relics, eat Indian food and sip chai tea.
So yeah, just nothing much to do in Switzerland for me that I can’t do else where.

To me Switzerland is not in the least boring. I love hiking and mountain scenery.

Expensive, yes. Boring, no.
