Can someone please verify this statement?

Can you point to the area on the elementary school report card that is for “homework?” Didn’t think so.

You kids 1-2-3-4 on their report card is closely tied to how they do on tests or performance based assessments.

If your kid gets a 59 on the math test but they did all their homework, they might get a 3 instead of the 2 that they deserve, but that’s up to the teacher. Saying homework counts is stretching.

This is a lie. My children's homework counts towards their grades. This is an FCPS elementary school.

Now that is an FCPS policy. We aren’t supposed to count he towards the academic grade.

ES Teacher

Homework and Extra Credit

Homework can be considered as part of the effort grade, but would not be used to grade academic achievement in elementary school since the function of homework is to provide practice in skill areas

I am surprised they still call it home work, that sounds prejudice against those without homes, maybe it should be called place where one lives work

Thank you for posting the policy proving the coworker was correct

To the OP:

- does that answer your question? Your coworker was mostly right, in that FCPS has largely done away with graded homework. What remains of homework now seems to be essentially meaningless / optional.

Never forget the few ignorant parents who think their kids homework counts as a grade, just because the teacher put a smiley face on it.

“Most schools…” There are 200 schools in FCPS. 140 of them are elementary schools. Let’s saying you’re opining about those elementary schools only. What position do you have that would be qualified to speak about over 70 (seventy!) elementary schools?

Exactly.

Some posters are pushing an agenda here.

OP here. My coworker definitely had an agenda with that statement. He is very proudly MAGA and takes every opportunity to spew his nonsense. I just want him to start backing up some of the ridiculous stuff he says.

The problem is it’s not nonsense. He’s absolutely right.

How so? The OP said the co-worker stated that hw is not allowed per FCPS policy. This says homework can be counted towards the effort grade, but not the academic grade. If hw can be counted toward the effort grade, it is obviously allowed.

NP.

Appears FCPS still maintains ungraded, optional, sporadically requested “homework” largely as a fig-leaf against claims it no longer has homework.

Ah yes- we arrive at the point when this forum is entirely useless because it’s all people trying to scare everyone to go mama bear and vote their way in the governor’s race. I’m out of here until Mid November

Imagine being someone strenuously arguing for more homework to own the libs.

First no homework, next no schoolwork, everyone gets As, equity achieved. Everybody wins, colleges will just add more remedial courses. Will need the money to cover grant losses.

As the character Hannibal Smith from the A Team used to say, love it when a plan comes together.

Thanks. This was my impression of how ES has become in our pyramid.

We have a “no homework” elementary school in FCPS. It is an official school policy. Our principal says studies show that homework at those ages doesn’t improve outcomes. They are asked to read nightly, but other than that, no homework.
