Can someone please verify this statement?

I don't have a child in FFX but my coworker just claimed that kids are "not allowed to be given homework in FFX county as a matter of district policy because it negatively disadvantages minority kids." I find that highly improbable, but I would love to know. He gets on my nerves for a host of other reasons, so I'd really like to prove him wrong.

No, that's not district policy at any level.

It's possible it is the policy a specific princpal or teacher has.

Happy to help. Please post what his response is. My money is that he’ll come back with some “Yeah, but…” nonsense.

I believe it’s determined on a school by school basis, but I would venture to bet most elementary schools give very little homework other than “read for X minutes/night”.

Not true.

Secondary: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/secondary/homework-and-makeup-work

Elementary varies more, some principals don’t want teachers giving hw, others are fine with it.

Thank you all. I figured he is wrong because he is wrong on most other stuff. He is a lawyer in my group and it always amazes me that he can't get even the most simple things right. Especially when there is a racial or other minority component to it. I've just had it with his nonsense.

It's his prejudice speaking, that's all.

Exactly.

If he’s a lawyer, I’d first ask him to provide a citation for his assertion. “I can wait while you look that up. As the 9th largest school system, I’m sure it’s codified somewhere. It should be easy to find in their regulations or even through a simple website search.”

No. Homework is still definitely a thing. My daughter had tons of it in 3rd grade. Hardly any in 4th and 5th.

True.

He is claiming now that his stepson is not allowed to be assigned homework in the elementary school he attends. As is always the case with this guy, he moves the goalposts when he gets caught being wrong. I told him that's not what he originally claimed and left it at that. I don't have the energy to keep arguing with him but he does this so often that sometimes I just can't help myself.

He changed the goalposts??? Shocker! I’d be tempted to send an email with a link to the policy in case he wants to reach out to his stepson’s school for clarification. But, then again, my name is Petty LaBelle. 😜

I don’t think that’s an official thing but most schools have stopped giving homework in the last several years. Although I’ve read that central office is going to be pushing for it again county wide.

He's wrong. It's a school by school policy.
