W&L versus Amherst

Amherst doesn't sound like a fit if she really likes sorority life. It is the opposite of that.

Amherst is great for outdoors and studying those subjects, but the odds of her getting in are lower than at W&L. If she wants sorority life, maybe look at Dartmouth or Middlebury.

I’m kinda confused on why amherst is being considered. Those aren’t its strong suit subjects and OP’s kid definitely likes W&L. Strange choice. Agree with the suggestions.

Middlebury abolished Greek like in the early ‘90s.

Amherst is significantly more selective than W&L. See where she gets in then visit.

+1 These schools almost seem like opposites, OP

Oh please. Do understand.... the problem that's not a problem?

W&L for sure. It’s so funny how on one post DCUM can reason that Pomona is the same as Oberlin, and then back track completely in the next post. W&L is a great school with many opportunities for your child to succeed.

So guys with a moral compass and who take personal responsibility? Sounds amazing compared to the strange toothpick shaped guys at the lacs our family has toured. Maybe my DD should apply

As I said, I don’t view it as a problem. The social scene seems a little 1950s but again, perhaps not a problem

Just a reminder, W&L is coed... very un 1950's social scene

History, Econ and poli sci are definitely Amherst strong suits. It’s a major feeder to both Harvard law and YLS.

But agree it seems unlikely kid will get into both so this is all highly theoretical.

Being good at prelaw advising isn’t the same as having quality departments in the humanities, just grade inflated ones. Amherst has so-so investment in all these majors except economics. If you do side-by-side comparisons of opportunities, W&L excels amherst in both History and Political science. It also has more business/econ coursework and opportunities, but Amherst has the IB prestige.

-Princeton mom, actually selective.

Btw: your kid should go to W&L. She’s gonna like it a lot more.

PP again. Princeton is easier to get into than Amherst from DD’s school. Maybe the difference is that Amherst doesn’t take into account legacy status.

Same with our very top NYC private. Princeton isn't easy, but it seems like an easier admit than Amherst from our private. I agree it might be legacy, and of course a much smaller class.
