Range Rover Sport or Land Rover Discovery?

I also wanted a 3rd row and I don't believe the RRsport offered a 3rd row.

The size of the Discovery appealed to me, it is roomy inside, but not an enormous car, good towing capacity and I like an armrest.

Regarding reliability, I have not found that to be an issue. This is my second Land Rover, I drove an LR3 for 8 yrs and have had the discovery for almost 5 yrs and have not had issues, neither has had to have a lot of repairs.
Oil changes, tires, some normal wear and tear.

With all due respect, doesn't the Discovery have the asymmetrical, squished looking back? Are they both squished?

Yes, it looks like an asymmetrical wet baby diaper.

the comparable jeep is a grand wagoneer and no one is off roading those either

Agreed.

I go offloading a ton in CO and the read off road suv is the 4 runner, maybe the Outback, but that's a station wagon. I also see a lot of trucks, like Tacoma.

The Wagoneer seems like the new Tahoe, which doesn't look all that capable anymore -- kind of like it's really just a minivan with a little more power. I would have expected the Wagoneer to resemble its iconic namesake at least a little.

The vintage Wagoneer had a shape similar to a vintage Rover, come to think of it, though it looked a little more like a station wagon. Maybe it's time to bring back some sharper angles for the sake of variety.

Neither. They both really suck. Get a Wranger or look at some BMW.
