adirondacks vs finger lakes for family trip

Could one of you let me know if you think this is doable:
Fly to Burlington, VT - rent car
Drive to either Lake Placid or Lake George - spend two nights.
Drive south to HV, staying for 2-3 nights in Hyde Park, visiting historic homes, eating at CIA, day trips, etc.
Drive home (NoVA). Total of about 5-6 nights. Is that too much driving?

Also, looking at places to stay at both Lake George and Lake Placid - any recs welcome! TIA.

I don't think it's too much driving, but then again I like driving. I'm doing a trip hitting the Hudson Valley, Saratoga, Lake Placid, and a stop for the night coming home in Philly, all in a weeks time driving from VA. No lodging recs, I'm mostly camping.

From a pure driving/distance perspective Lake George is a lot closer to the main highway. If it's not out of your budget range, stay at the Sagamore

Thanks! Can you tell me how many days you think would be good for the Sagamore? We were thinking two nights, but the first day will be mainly driving just to get there, so maybe three nights? Is there enough to do there for an extra day?

Nothing like playing mini golf and eating crap food during the day, only to retire to your $500 a night hotel at night. (Just a wild guess, I grew up around there, never stayed at the hotel.)

If you like being outside you could spend 100 days in the area.

Is the town of West Point a good stopping place to have lunch on the way up to Lake George?

Thanks for bumping this. We're considering a vacation in the region (NY or Vermont) so it's good to hear some perspectives. I was leaning towards Vermont just because NY seemed to have a lot of hunting cabins, and my daughter has a fear of taxidermy animals.

IMO, neither.

You'll be on I-87. Stay close to the highway. New Paltz. Or this https://maps.app.goo.gl/scxJ86hXiQNS2m3P6

Or the Uptown part of Kingston.

Or for something very convenient but unexciting, many options near the Northway Mall in Albany.

This is an odd thing to worry about considering Vermont has hunting too and you could just stay in hotels...

Interested in West Point. Is it a nice town to stop in?

Beats me. It didn't make this list.

Has anyone visited Ithaca or Cortland NY on or right after Christmas? Does it feel empty with the students gone? Would skiing at Greek Peak be too crowded or less crowded in this time frame?

Not OP but also interested in taking a family vacation (two adults, one child, and one dog) in the Adirondacks, especially Lake Placid, next summer. Where have people stayed and enjoyed?
