Interested in West Point. Is it a nice town to stop in?

What?

Beats me. It didn't make this list.

Has anyone visited Ithaca or Cortland NY on or right after Christmas? Does it feel empty with the students gone? Would skiing at Greek Peak be too crowded or less crowded in this time frame?

Not OP but also interested in taking a family vacation (two adults, one child, and one dog) in the Adirondacks, especially Lake Placid, next summer. Where have people stayed and enjoyed?

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Lake Placid, in one of the upgraded rooms with a balcony. Was a great place for young kids as there was an on site restaurant (very friendly with allergies,) and 24/7 ice water and coffee available. There is also an indoor pool (nothing spa like, more wood paneling theme, but lovely!) It is up a hill overlooking mirror lake, so keep that in mind that you will have to walk up a hill. But it’s next to the Olympic museum and easily accessible to the ski jump (super cool to go to the top) and the Bobsled/mountain coaster track. We loved Lake Placid with young kids!

New Paltz and Kingston are closer to the Thruway and have good lunch options.

Stayed at the Haus right on Mirror Lake in the middle of Lake Placid. It was an apartment set up so worked really well for a family. We loved it— we walked everywhere in town.

Lots of students (particularly grad students, law, business, etc.) will still be (or will be back) on campus. Greek Peak would be more crowded during holiday break then other times in the winter. If in Ithaca have dinner at Gola's or The Heights Cafe.
