Hamilton isn’t that good and is like 7 songs too long

Earlier poster here. Everyone who's got their nose in the air about Hamilton is a snob. Can we only like the works of Rodgers and Hammerstein or Sondheim to be accepted into the upper echelons of good taste? Get over yourselves.

Theater, and specifically musical theater, has room for all of us. And as far as Hamilton goes, I loved the original cast recording. Wore it out. Memorized the whole thing. We went to see it on stage and I deeply disliked it. The bare set was great, but the lines were lost in a poor sound system and everything about the choreography was so busy and distracting that, IMO, it nearly sunk the entire experience. I've also stayed away from watching it on TV via streaming.

Sondheim said he liked Hamilton.

(Of course, he also had a rule not to criticize the work of his living colleagues.)

Somehow it's still selling out every week on Broadway nine years and counting.

“Somehow” Entemann’s sells lots of donuts, too. Doesn’t make them good. And the “somehow” isn’t hard to pinpoint: the masses have bad taste.

How dare you

Hamilton. Banksy. Serena Williams. Ironic chicken and waffles for brunch at the Four Seasons. I see you.

Wow, chip on your shoulder, much?

I loved Hamilton for several of the songs, plus Daveed Diggs. More than that, what I loved was pushing the boundaries of a Broadway show, something that hadn't been done before, and wasn't considered possible. The words per minute.
Hamilton, 144/minute
Phantom as an example was 68/minute

They also told an expected story in an unexpected way.

Basically, they pushed the envelope.

I've read through the thread. You've got every kind of snob posting.

What are the 7 songs you would cut?

Eliza and the last song always make me cry.

Hello Rip Van Wrinkle! The musical came out in 2015! Have you been sleeping all this time?

Guess what, LMM is actually a mediocre talent.

Literally every musical is. I stopped going to musicals because they are all so overated.

Just saw it on Broadway during spring break with my kids. WOW--I am late to the party but the show blew me away and my younger one is now into the music so we listen to it together pretty frequently now. My teen saw it with my husband 8yrs ago when it first came to DC and at the time I just wasn't as interested. My SIL saw it with LMM and the original case and was trying to explain to me how the show was life changing and I remember scoffing at her remark. Lifechanging--okayyy. Over time, I got to know the music a little and saw parts of it on Disney+ but never really sat down to watch the whole thing, but seeing it in person and maybe because it was on Broadway was just amazing. I loved it.

We saw it on Broadway with the original cast, on a night with no substitutes. The show was electric.

If someone sees it on the road, with a mediocre cast, then maybe it could seem overrated. But that can be true of any show. I would also guess that it is harder to get enough great actors on the road to be able to perform the caliber of songs required. As already mentioned, the words per minute is off the charts.

I thought Hamilton on Broadway was incredible. The soundtrack is also great to listen to, but I think you have to go to the Broadway theater to really connect with the story emotionally. Disney+ just wasn’t the right format to showcase the brilliance of it. You have to be in that NY theater - which is really pretty small - and right there in the same space with the performers to feel it in the right way.

And I loved even though I saw it without the original cast - so I can’t imagine how kind blowing the opening run was like.

Now, if you saw it on Broadway and still didn’t like it, I’m not sure you are a true Broadway musical person. But as far as I’m concerned, Hamilton was one of the all time great Broadway shows.
