Handyman who charges less if you help

Anonymous
DH and I need lots of jobs done around the house; I think they're all within the scope of a homeowner, but neither of knows how to do any off this stuff, let alone the correct way, don't particularly want to study how to do it all, and we aren't super well-off. We're hoping to move out of the area in a year or so, so we need to get the stuff (deck in bad need of repair, installing new closet doors with new drywall above, etc) done before we list. Finding a good handyman has been hard enough. Any recs?

No offense, but I actually think it would slow a good handyman down if you wanted to help and work with him.

So you want your handyman to teach you how to do the repairs, while he's doing the repairs, for less money than he usually gets? That will be a hard sell.

Any good handyman will be able to do a job faster (and move on to other jobs) if s/he works alone. You "helping" is a disincentive. I think you might be better off finding someone's handy husband or brother or older son who is handy and wants some pocket change.

On an unrelated note, anyone know of a hairdresser who will charge me less if I hold and hand the foils to her?

OP, if you know how to do the project, you can get day wages labor to help you. Handymen like to overcharge.

You've been watching too much HGTV

They should charge more if they are teaching you/you helping without the experience or knowhow. We have found people at reasonable prices but we actually do the work and they supplement vs. the other way around. We have all our own tools and basic knowhow. You have no tools and no how and are not willing to put in the true effort to learn. Good luck with that.

Mine charges nothing if I blow him!

I am handy, and I have occasionally helped my handyman. He charged the same per hour -- so it was irrelevant if I slowed him down or helped him speed things up. I did it only when I was doing some decorative stuff, to make sure it was exactly as I wanted. But never to ask for a discount.
