| I have a few friends in IT who indicated that they took a pay cut when they took up a Fed job. Non-IT ones, came in at about the same. How much bump/cut did you get (and what field?) |
| I am in Contracts. I went from making $130k to $94k. GS-12, step 8. |
| I turned it down -- Senior Scientist/physicist with PhD, 20 years experience, offered GS13 step 1 |
|
The most annoying people in my Fed workplace are the former BIGLAWYERS who complain about the pay cuts they
took. We heard you the first time. Enough already! |
| I was making about $75k and took a paycut for a gs-9/11/12 ladder. Hired as a 9 step 1 so took a gigantic paycut. Honestly it was worth it. There were some other perks that came with the fed job but I'll be back to where I was in two years and will only go up from there. I may be an extreme case though. My DH got a $6k pay raise to go from contractor to fed. |
I don't know why anyone who came from the private sector to public complain about this. Um, you knew when you applied for the job, your pay was probably going to go down. Annoys me to know end also. |
Well, the complaints are usually because the gov't advertises a range. For example 90K -140 K for a position advertised at 13/14. So, I, who am earning 150+K, think 140K, and the gov't offers me GS 13 step 1 (90K). That is about what I would have received 20 years ago out of grad school. |
| About $5k in gross salary...was unsuccessful at getting them to match with a higher step. But the benefits were vastly improved and a year later got my grade increase which was much higher than I'd have been making if I'd stayed. |
Agreed. Also the leave is much better as are the hours |
But, why complain to coworkers? We don't care!
|
| I got an increase of a few thousand dollars. They matched my salary as a contractor and went to the next highest step. It was a GS14, step 7, if I recall correctly. |
| In my field (PhD) it is a 50% pay cut for a govie job. |
PP here. No -- I would not do that. My comments were to HR. I knew the hiring manager, but did not complain to him. I stated I can not afford this level of pay cut. He understood. |
| My husband took a 10k paycut. |
PhD isn't a field. I have a PhD too and my govie job pays more than most jobs IN MY FIELD. |
