I just received an emailed letter from DCPS telling me how excited they are to announce the “jump start” of MacFarland Middle School’s Dual Language Program next school year. There is a pdf letter attached which I don't know how to post...sorry. I'm confused...the letter is written making it sound as if a Dual Language Program is being added to an already existing MacFarland MS. But MacFarland closed, right? That's where Roosevelt is now operating until their renovations are done, right? And while the DME process tried to lay the groundwork for MacFarland reopening, it's not yet, right? I'm just really confused by this "announcement." The announcement should be that MacFarland is reopening and will have a dual language program...not that a dual language program is opening at MacFarland. I'm confused! Shed light oh DCPS insiders? |
I got the same email. The pdf says they're opening the dual language MS program in the renovated Roosevelt HS space (sharing with the HS program). Once the MS space is renovated, then the full MS program will move in there. |
McFarland is coming back Fall 2016, they will share space with Roosevelt for the time being. My kid is only a toddler but this good news and the first immesion middle school from DCPS. DCPS dual language kids get gauranteed entry (powell, cleveland, west, Bruce Monroe-forgot the other one). I still hope it is academically solid, thats the deal breaker for us even though we are in one of the feeder schools. Other kids would have to be on grade level for reading and writing in spanish and lottery in. |
You got the list wrong. The DCPS dual language programs that will start feeding next year are: Powell, Bruce-Monroe, Tyler, Cleveland, Marie Reed, and Bancroft. The non-dual-language (?) neighborhood schools that will feed MacFarland (West, Truesdell, and Raymond) don't see any changes for now. |
can someone share the email?
so they've created a feeder pattern like DCI? Is Bancroft included? |
https://dcpsplanning.wordpress.com/2015/09/10/dual-language-at-macfarland-middle-school-beginning-next-year/ Yes, Bancroft is listed there. |
I think Dr. Beer's letter is pretty good. They acknowledge up front that keeping the 6th and 7th graders separated from the high school kids is important. That will be the first big hurdle. This is just the first announcement, I realize. But very quickly, they'll need to show parents of prospective 6th graders exactly how they will be separated from the high school. I would want to see it on a architectural rendering. This is pretty exciting news. I hope DCPS can pull it off. |
It is pretty exciting news. I will be serving on the MacFarland Community Cabinet beginning next week (due to our efforts setting up the NW Saturday Academy). If anyone has any questions they would like to see asked of the DCPS administration about this dual language program or any aspect of the new middle school, please post them here or send them to ideas "at" nwsadc.com. I will be sure to relay them in our meetings. |
So will education campuses feed there? Like West, Takoma, and Whittier? |
Good question. Does anybody know? Or will those school continue to be Educational campuses? Will MacFarland be able to fit all those feeder schools? |
Per the letter, West, Raymond, Truesdell and Barnard will feed into MacFarland beginning in SY18-19. |
That sucks for the Northern schools, but they don't have the space or an empty building. |
Something tells me there will be plenty of space to lottery into the new MS for the foreseeable future. |
Wow. Love how they copied DCI but in true DCPS inequity, they get to demand that anybody coming into the dual language program has to be at grade level in the target language, while DCI has to accommodate and plan for kids who lottery in with no language background. Just another example of the bullshit that goes on in this city.... |
