Cricket in the air vent - Shut up!

Anonymous
We just moved to a new house. It was fine the first couple of weeks, but now there is a very loud cricket in the air vent. DH had an idea of blowing a hair dryer through the vent to make it an inhospitable environment which lasted about 10 minutes, but then the chirping started again.

Is it safe to spray Raid down there? I don't want the fumes blowing back out when the AC is on.

Other suggestions? (I can only hear it, I can't see it).

I think you just have to wait it out.... I would not spray any poison that's just going to come back as an inhalant.

Burn it. Burn it with fire op.

Try releasing a praying mantis in your vent... it will eat the cricket, and is much quieter.

Super late but I was desperately searching for an answer to this question due to a cricket in my wall (or possibly intake vent, can’t be 100% sure). I took a fan and aimed it up the vent on high, and sprayed some diluted lavender essential oil on the actual vent itself. 20min later, cricket has been silent for over an hour. (There are multiple essential oils bugs like crickets dislike, including mint and lemon, so you could try those as well.) Hope this helps anyone who’s looking!

(Oops, I meant after 20min of running the fan on high, the cricket has been gone for over an hour now. Can’t edit my comment.)

Poor cricket! They bring luck to your home.

I actually use juice of 2 lemons & about ¼water in a spray bottle. I sprayed my ac. So far, chirping stopped us been an hour🙏🙏🙏
Tomorrow I'll go at our with leave blower to clean out the back

I had one in the wall and had to wait for it to die which took a long time.

Buy these sticky cricket traps. Open up your vent and place this just inside. Just don’t forget it’s in there. You’ll have to remove the trap with glued on carcasses. Gross but effective.

I imagine the original cricket, from 2015, has been dead for some time now, but thanks for reviving an 8 y/o thread to share.

Sticky trap or diatomaceous earth (non toxic!)

I actually just used diatomaceous earth on my dining room cricket and haven’t heard from it in two days! I was losing my mind…

Just wait. The poor thing will die quickly enough.

AND HOW DUMB ARE YOU THAT YOU'D SPRAY RAID IN YOUR AIR VENT?

You know this is toxic for humans, right?

Dear goodness, it's a wonder you're able to type on a keyboard if you're seriously thinking of poisoning yourself voluntarily because of a little cricket who is singing his heart out and dying down there.

I haven’t slept in days. I wake up in the middle of the night and go out into my living room and start kicking the vent it’s hiding in. Screaming at it. He thinks he’s my pet I think. I just sprayed peppermint spider spray, worked for 5 mins. Now he’s mad. I just turned my heat up to 80 so he’s about to have his very own barbecue. Goodnight moon.
