Cricket in the air vent - Shut up!

Anonymous
Ah... noisy crickets! They were everywhere where I grew up. Once, when I was a kid, I was so annoyed by a cricket that wouldn't shut up I clumsily slammed my hand on the table and the pencil I was trying to use for my homework pierced my hand. I still have the "lead" mark.

I just sprayed peppermint spider spray, worked for 5 mins. Now he’s mad. I just turned my heat up to 80 so he’s about to have his very own barbecue. Goodnight moon.

You know it gets up to +100F outside and we still have crickets.

We use sticky pads. When they hop onto it, they get stuck! and eventually they die. I would put that at the vent's entrance. Poke some holes in it so the air can still move through it. Or you can put them inside the vents. If not, use large pieces of tape and make it double sided, place them in the vent or at the entrance of the opening.

Sticky pads like this: https://www.amazon.com/Cricket-Glue-Traps-Indoor-Home/dp/B07SHHS33Z

Home Depot has them.

I would not spray any poison into the vents, because the air is being circulated around the house through the vents.

DH had an idea of blowing a hair dryer through the vent to make it an inhospitable environment which lasted about 10 minutes, but then the chirping started again.

Is it safe to spray Raid down there? I don't want the fumes blowing back out when the AC is on.

Other suggestions? (I can only hear it, I can't see it).

I had a cricket in the wall and had to wait for it to die which it finally did a month later. I have no idea what it ate or drank to live so long!

Poor you OP! I was woken up at 2 am the other day by a loud cricket. I could not see it but noticed the noise was coming from a sink that we don’t use much so I ran water down it and it stopped.

I like your DH’s air dryer idea - I would do that again. Could you try putting central heating on for a few hours in early morning when it is colder outside to see if that helps?

Sticky traps. Works like a charm. It’s just a flat sticky piece of paper. Open the vent and position it just inside. Don’t forget to remove it later.

You sure it’s not a smoke detector telling you it needs replacing?

Best thing for crickets and other house pests is a cat or two. Ours would enjoy playing with the crickets for a bit before dispatching them.

Nothing you can do but wait for it to die and the one that was in my house took his own sweet time.
