DCUM MCPS parents.. help me with MCPS bus question

Anonymous
I've been calling/emailing MCPS bus depot for weeks, and no one is answering/responding. Damn frustrating.

Here's the question:

My DC takes the bus to a HGC. One of the bus stops is at a private residence (I'm assuming the student is GT/LD or SN). This stop is actually closer to our house than the neighborhood school where the bus also stops. Can my DC get on the bus at the private residence instead of at the neighborhood school bus stop? Anyone know?

Yes. Your kid can get on the bus using ANY bus=stop on the route. ( Make sure that the bus will stop on the SN kid's home though. Check to see that that stop is listed).

To get a response from someone at the bus-depot, email all the three people at the bus depot (listed on the website) for the bus on that route number.

That is my understanding too. Your child can get on any bus, from any bus stop, that goes to your child's school. There is no such thing as a private bus stop.

I would talk to the owners of the private residence/parents of the other student first, though.

OP here. THANK YOU! Good idea to email all three. Will do just to make sure.

I assume that if that one kid at the private residence is sick that day, the bus still stops there because the bus driver wouldn't know that the kid is sick, right?

My (non magnet) kids have a bus stop in front of some ones house..anyone can get on.

OP here. I finally got an email back from the bus depot. This person said my DC cannot board the bus at a SN kid's private residence. I responded asking why. Anyone know?

Is the stop not listed?

I don't know why. Please post back with the answer, when you get it!

Are you sure the SN kid is going to the same school as your child? We have a SN child in our neighborhood that catches a bus outside of her house but I would have no idea of what school she is going to or the route the bus is taking to get there.

OP here.

Yes, the stop is listed. And to the other PP's question about whether that bus goes to the same school as my DC's, yes it does. It is the same bus DC would've taken at the other stop. It's on the bus route schedule. It's the stop right after the stop at the neighborhood school where they pick up the other kids that go to the HGC.

And to make this even more frustrating, the timing of the bus schedule they have published is not the same timing that the bus driver is going by. I looked up the bus timings this morning, and talked to the bus driver today and saw the driver's schedule. It's off by 5 min. I checked the website again when I got home. Man, they are disorganized.

yes, I did ask the bus driver if my DC could take the bus at the private residence, and the driver said he didn't know. ARgh.

My child goes to an immersion program, and when I contacted the school , I was told although the home addresses may be closer , they are for autism students only and my child won't be allowed to get on the bus there.

Ugh. Way to protect student privacy. Not.

Be thankful your child got into the HGC program and know your child will have a terrific year! Pick your battles, the bus stop isn't it.

A mom of a former HGC student.
