I have not heard of any of them. Where do you live? what age is your child?

She is in 4th grade and we live in Bethesda. We need someone who can address her learning differences, which are in a number of areas, to support her work in school.

our child's learning specialist was very helpful in giving recommendations

Does MCPS allow tutors to come in to the classroom or a resource room during the school day to provide "private tutoring"?

This would be after-school support. The issues run the gamut to fill in gaps in areas related to spatial concepts (mostly math, but also the Russian doll ordering relationships among other concepts, like where we live or family trees), as well as working on writing skills and reading for themes and main ideas.

I was just doing a search on Cheryl McLaughlin myself. She was recommended to me by two neighbors who absolutely love her. Their kids are in the 1st grade/2nd grade and she has been able to catch them up significantly.
My daughter has dyslexia and we are looking for a tutor to meet with us twice a week before school. I have spoke to Cheryl and she is accommodating that schedule and we start this week. Wish me luck!

I also went onto the Lab School's website. They have a roster of tutors and their credentials.

Other than the lab school, where can I find a list of tutors that address dysgraphia and dyslexia?

I feel like I will find myself in your shoes, OP. But I can't help asking if your child is appropriately placed int eh right classroom if she needs such extensive supports. Is her IEP sufficient enough?

I only ask bc it seems like the school should be addressing these concerns and why are they not? As I said, I have a child with LDs and autism and we are already struggling bc I feel that the IEP is not good enough. Just curious.

For dyslexia I have used ASDEC (http://asdec.org/) ... call them for names.

Last spring somebody on this site mentioned http://ectutoring.com/about-us for organizational skills and study skills. I have not used them but that thread had numerous positive comments about them.

I find the tutor is necessary to get a child to their potential, the IEP is essential to make sure they get the minimum standard, unless you are LDGT.

I have a tutor for my SN daughter. It's not a matter of the IEP or the school not being good enough. Tutors help support the introduction of new class material and work through it on an individual level with the child to make sure it is understood, especially with a special needs child. Depending on what you want from the tutor, they assist with homework, develop problem-solving skills, identify areas in which your child needs remedial help from the teacher, and support the classroom work. A child's classroom support can be doing just fine in school and the child can still get tutoring.

You could try Stephanie Owens at learninglinksdc.com. She has a lot of experience, including work in DCPS and DC private schools plus tutoring, a lot in LDs. Good luck, all!
