Charters near Brightwood Park

Anonymous
Hi,

Pretty new to DC and have a child who will be entering the PK3 lottery next spring. We're also considering a move to Brightwood Park (currently in Columbia Heights) and I want to make sure I have a list of school options near the area. So far I have:

Truesdell (IB)
Powell
LAMB
Shining Stars
Creative Minds
Apple Tree (Columbia Heights)
EL Haynes

Am I missing others?

Shepherd--although PK3 has been all IB the last two years. However, it's possible they could open a second PK3 class in 2016--that was the plan of the former principal; not sure if the new principal will follow through on it.

PP here. Also consider West (although not sure about PK3 odds--maybe someone else can chime in).

West should be on your list. I would cross out Truesdell. West has an excellent PK3 and PK4 program. Why isn't Brightwood on your list? You might even consider Takoma Park.

Takoma Park is in Maryland, but Takoma Educational Campus is in DC.

OP, you should add that school to your list.

We live in Brightwood and attend Powell. We absolutely love the school. Good luck!

Thank you for distinguishing the two schools.

PP here, make your IB school your last choice unless you really want a spot.

You asked for charters but are getting DCPS suggestions and had one on your list so I will add Barnard.

Bridges.

I know West has IB families on the WL this year. May not be as easy to get a spot OOB. I believe Barnard does also.

are you in brightwood or in brightwood park? We live in the latter and were just redistricted from brightwood elementary to west, which many do like, at least in the younger years. The boundary has moved north (maybe to madison?) ….but I thought only brighwood was trues dale.

Anyway….we are at haynes. 5 min car ride, fairly convenient by bus or walking if you are further south than us. also consider bridges, cap city, creative minds, powell (but hard for IB to get in now?), and shepherd. We got offered a K shepherd spot off the WL this year.

oh, we of course wanted LAMB more than anything, but never got in. Close one year (top 5 for prek4 but no spot).
