| I haven't flown internationally on my own, making my own flights, well, ever. It's always been as part of a group who made the arrangements on my behalf. Considering tagging along with DH on a trip to London in the fall (mid-October). It seems like the flight is going to be the most expensive part of the trip. I'm seeing between $800-900 per person. Is that reasonable? Typical? I keep seeing these articles about how prices for flights are dropping, but I've been watching this route for a few weeks and haven't noticed any changes. I'm probably taking our toddler with us, too, so we'll have to buy two seats (he'll be 3). |
| That's a good price. I'd buy now. Recent flight to Paris from the U.S. was 2k...another flight to Germany would have been 2.6k so didn't go. Buy now. Also, you know you need passports for everyone right? |
Yikes. OK, that doesn't sound so bad, now! DH and I have passports, so I just have to get one for DS (if we decide to go). We are in the process of refinancing our house and are planning on buying a new car to replace our seriously old (14 YO!) car this year, and while we have the money, it's just going to feel like a kick in the gut! At least we'll only need hotel for the time that DH isn't on the clock. I have been to England before (only a couple hours in London, though) and remember it was really expensive! |
| if it's less than $1k I'd buy it. |
London will never again be an inexpensive trip until they cut the ticket taxes. They add around $300 to each ticket. |
| London, like New York, is not a cheap destination. But there are many things there (like the museums) that are cheap or free, and like New York you can eat well for little money if you do some research. |
That's my thinking, too, and while we're still a little on the fence, we are adding to our family in early 2016, and a chance to do a trip like this again might be in the very distant future. I just don't see myself dragging two little kids around an unfamiliar city by myself while DH is working! I also have to take leave, which I was kind of trying to save for "maternity leave," but you only live once, right? |
| We paid about 850 for a direct flight to London out of Dulles in early June. I had been shopping for a while and that was about as good as it was going to get. Not sure if fall is cheaper, but anything less than $900 sounds pretty good to me. Have fun! |
| That is a great price, go for it. |
| $800-900 is a great price. I often pay $1000-1200, although am usually buying tickets closer to the travel date and don't have a lot of flexibility on dates of travel. As a PP pointed out the taxes for Heathrow are very high so it's hard to do much better. |
| DH just paid $7900 for his flight to London. Your prices seem like a steal! |
First class? |
NP. that sounds like what I pay for business class. First is probably closer to $11,000. |
|
Anything under $1k is a bargain. I paid $1,700 in June (booked months in advance), and my friend paid $1,500 for the same flight (booked weeks in advance).
I'm jealous...wish I could go to London this fall ;0) |
|
Another vote that anything under $1000 is probably as good as you will get. In Summer that would be a steal.
You might find slightly cheaper from BWI or PHI, or by looking at connecting flights through Iceland or Ireland, but generally under 1K is time to buy. |
