Rising kindergartener - how much sleep?

Anonymous
We are adjusting to no nap and I think our 5 year old isn't getting enough sleep. He wakes between 6 and 730 in the morning. He would probably sleep longer but his little brother wakes him. He is usually asleep by 830 or 9 at night. Is this enough and is this a good plan for kindly? Would love some insight. Thanks.

I was going to suggest maybe a solid 10 hours since it seems 9 isn't enough. Here is what the experts say:

Don't overthink it. When school starts if he is tired or over cranky have him go to bed earlier. My 4 year old goes to bed around 9 and wakes up by 7 without a nap. DS will be in 2nd and usually wants to go to bed around 8. He also wakes up around 7. I have friends who put their kids to bed at 7 and others that have kids that stay up until 10. You will know if he needs more sleep.

Kids are all different. My oldest was a 12 hour sleeper no matter what time she went to bed. School year we did 7:30pm-7:30am. My younger one didn't need as much sleep and needed more time in the morning to get moving. She was 8pm lights out and up at 6:45am.

Our just turned 5 rising K is going to bed between 7:30 and 8pm and up around 6:30. She probably has not been getting enough sleep given the amount of activity at her camp and no nap. Lots of evening meltdowns and harder to wake up when we need to. My guess is that K plus SACC will probably be like this, but maybe not so much physical activity (she is at tae kwon do camp and they have class daily, swim 2x a week and play other indoor gym games throughout the day).

My rising kindergartener sleeps 11 hours a night on average -- a little more if there's been an exhausting day. It does vary by kid, but especially during a time of big transition (and going to K is a big transition), you should be erring on the side of more sleep, not less. Get your child to bed earlier.

In K, mine did 10-11 hours and needed it. The little ones -at least the ones I knew- were WIPED out at the end of the day. Especially at the beginning of the year.

Mine is a rising first grader but 9-7:30, we will revert to 8:30 to 7 when school starts.

You should start to get them adjusted before school starts. Maybe gradually wake them up a little earlier each day.

My DC needed 11 hours of sleep at that age. In K they get super tired and the proper sleep time was crucial.

Parents also have to factor in whether the child has afterschool activities like after care of classes that are after 6. It has a huge impact on children who are younger.

My rising K-er does 9 - 7 with no nap. I'm going to try to move him to 8 and will be happy with 8:30 over the next few weeks.

The little brother is the problem
Of course the kid needs sleep if he keeps being woken up
