We do. I didn't literally mean WHEN school starts, obviously. We start a week or so out. |
| Mine sleeps 11 hours a night. Kindergarten is a big translation. Don't be surprised if your child ends up needing more sleep than usual for the first couple months! |
Transition. Sorry |
| Mine were both exhausted the first few months of kindergarten and we went from 8:30 pm bedtime at 7:00 pm after the first week. They spend a lot of energy focusing, sitting still, following directions, etc. in Kindergarten- it is very different from pre school. See how he does the first week. Mine were both tired and whiny by 6:30 every night and slept great all night long, even after moving the bedtime up. |
Actually it wasn't obvious because a lot of parents do not get their children adjusted to the new schedule before school starts. You even admitted that the way it was written made it seem like you were literally waiting until school starts.
|
| Mine rising Kindergartener sleeps 7 - 6:15 during the school year. She would probably even be better off with another half hour, but the evening and morning are already as trimmed for time as we can get them. |
|
5yr olds need 11hrs or sleep so no, he is not getting enough.
My daughter (turning 6 this week) sleeps 8pm to 7 or 7:30am nightly during the school year. If I put her to bed later, she would wake up earlier and be cranky by dinner. Summer she is 9pm to 8am. No naps although on busy days she is asleep by 8pm and has been known to sleep 12-12.5hrs at night. |
| When our child started K he was already used to DCPS having been to preschool at the same school for two years. But K pushed his bedtime up to 7:30. We aim to be upstairs by 7:30 or 7:45 and asleep by 8. I imagine 1st will be the same. He wakes by 6:30, usually earlier. |
|
My kids (rising 3rd and 1st graders) still get about 11h per night (usually 8-7, more like 9-8 this summer). They are active and play HARD. Plus, DH and are in bed by 10, so we like a little down time in the evening!
FWIW, at our charter school, a few of the K students were permitted to go to the PK classroom and nap with the PKers if they were ardent nappers. |
