ECNL forcing Brave & Union Partnership

We have heard of parents offer their vacation house to coach or tickets to a game. Definitely happens.

What about for college roster spots?

We’re gonna have to up our donations to the club to ensure playing time. What are other families donating? $10k or $25k?
serious question is this not allowed or frowned upon. I was gonna donate 7k from my company and get some prime ad space…

My kid was going to start regardless but its a nice write off

Oh it’s quite standard in DMV pay to play. $10k is the minimum to have a little sway. Board membership helps provide an ongoing voice of entitlement.

+100 to all of this but these sort of unsavory payments don't go only to the club, which are traceable and could raise questions. the smart money goes under the table to the coaches/soccer directors in the form of private training, vacations, car stipends, etc.

Imagine finding out in your 20's your parents payed bribes for you to get off the bench

These players are classified as "on ECNL but not playing ECNL"

What club has car stipends and vacations? Sounds like major BS to me. Parents of week players making up stories.

I think you missed the point. It's not the clubs who offer them, it's the wealthy parents/board members.

Parents with the means giving their kids all the advantages possible? What is surprising about that? It happens in every aspect of life not just club soccer. It happens in every country in the world not just US. If you were in a position to do it you would too.

At every level, in every aspect of life, there are people at a higher level than they would be if it were only based on merit. Jobs, schools, and yes sports too. Those with the resources use them. Those without complain about it

Yep, LeBron James Jr is a prime example. Good basketball player but wouldn't be in the NBA without his Dad's influence in the Lakers front office.

ECNL and GA are not the same standard. Stop kidding yourself.

Replace RECRUITING with CLUB SOCCER. It never changes.

College Soccer Truth ™
@ImCollegeSoccer

The recruiting process isn’t always fair. There may be some recruits who are less talented than you who are getting opportunities you aren’t. But I guarantee you there are some recruits better than you who aren’t getting any opportunities.

ECNL or GA it really does not matter. There are way too may kids who are in ECNL or GA who can't even run let alone play. It is more of a bragging right for kids more than anything soccer. Or the parents/coaches playing a dirty game taking kids who don't deserve to be there. And the poor kid does not even know her helicopter parents sneaked in behind other kids who deserve to be there instead. The result? Teams that can't perform and then you go to nationals and you lose 10-0 to a California team LOL. Parents need to focus on development for the long run until college not get their kid to ECNL or GA for Instagram bragging in middle school.

So your position is there should be fewer kids in ECNL or GA. By what mechanism do you wish this to happen? Do you envision a world where some authority gets to dictate how many teams are allowed in a certain league? Who and why would anyone get this power?

ECNL/GA and soccer clubs are businesses. They wouldn't exist if there weren't demand and people willing to pay for them. It's strange that you would want to limit them. Do you also want to limit how many restaurants or cars exist because there are too many bad ones? I guarantee if people didn't want more soccer teams and leagues they would stop existing. They exist because that's what we want.

The advantage is getting your kid through the door.
They have the responsibility to then perform and earn the right to stay.

Spoken like someone with advantages. The kid who earned the right after getting through the door only had to compete against the subset of other kids who got through the door with their advantage. It’s how the world works and isn’t likely to change but it should still be recognized for what it is.

It's a want vs need argument. Parents want as many ECNL teams in the area so their kid has a better shot of making "the top team". but just like you said, they exist because that is what you want and are willing to pay for as parents. It's not what the players need, and the more teams in ECNL or GA dilutes each team and makes it more difficult to compete at a national level.
