Every Friday and/or Saturday night there is a party in the DMV that my teen wants to attend. I normally try not to let her go both nights, but she always says "there is nothing else going on and I'm bored". All her friends are good kids, so that is not the issue. I realize it's summer time, but when the party starts/ends late and I have to pick her up from the Metro at 2am, it becomes an issue for me. Do most people just let their teens hang out?
Sure. What else would you rather your kid be doing? Knitting while watching a Lifetime movie at home? It's just not realistic. I did encourage her to babysit, and often she'd go out on Friday nights, babysit Saturday nights and then go sleep over at a friend's house.
When DD was in high school and going to parties on both nights with her best friend, I'd coordinate with the best friend's parents. One of us did the late night pick up on Friday night and the other did it Saturday night.
