Safe Baby Shampoo, what do you use?

Anonymous
So I've become paranoid about toxins in baby shampoo after reading several articles lately. I've been looking through the Environmental Working Group's "Skin Deep" website which gives scores indicating cosmetic safety. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/browse.php?category=baby%20shampoo&order=webscore+INC&&showmore=products&start=0

I haven't heard of any of these organic brands. California Baby, which everyone says is safe, isn't even in the top tier! And Burt's Bees is in the moderate risk category.

Does anyone out there know of them or use them? How do you rectify this knowledge about the toxins in shampoos with what you bathe your child in? I find this all very confusing, so hearing from other moms would be great. TIA

I take Cosmetics Database with a serious grain of salt. A lot of the warnings it gives haven't been proven. Not saying they aren't true, just that we have yet to prove problems with things such as parabens and the like. It's a nice research tool, but definitely not a Bible.

And I use Cetaphil Face Lotion on my DC, hair and all, as recommended by the pedi for his eczema.

We use Dr Bronner's baby castile soap, for hair and skin, per the ped's recommendation. You have to get past the crazy religious ranting on the labels, though.

Apparently the oils in the organic shampoos can be just as harmful. Moms have been using Johnsons for YEARS and I don't see any reason to think it is not safe.

We use Aveeno products on our DD since they were recommended by our pediatrician. When all the news on parabens and such came out, I kind of panicked too. But, you have to keep it in perspective. How many kids do you know who grew up marinated in Johnson & Johnson? Lots, I'm sure. IMO, you can't just read the risk levels on the EWG's website w/o considering the "real" risk that the item poses. For instance, something branded a 3 might be branded as such because is contains a chemical that has a 3% chance of causing cancer in a lab rat. Not to mention, that an item branded a 2 might cause an allergic reaction in your particular child. EVERYTHING comes w/ risks-- food, toys, cosmetics, etc. You have to pick and choose your battles or you'll drive yourself crazy. At one of my DD's well-visits, I asked my pediatrician which of the "hot topic" environmental risks I should really worry about. I'm sure many doctor's would disagree, but she said pesticides on food, hormones in milk, and lead. I've chosen to put bath products low on my list.

I don't go by the database - I use whatever works best. I use a variety of shampoos on my kids, most recently Paul Mitchell Kids and Suave conditioner (my daughter has super-long hair).

I was going to start using this recently for DC but then got concerned because it's not "tear free". Has that been a problem for you? (Or anyone else who uses it?)

We like the Baby Weleda products.
I feel most comfortable with their ingredient list.

It hasn't been a problem. We only started using it after she was 1 year old, so she's pretty good about lying back or at least looking up while I rinse. I can see how it would be a problem for younger babies. But actually, I have gotten a little bit of it in her eyes on a couple occasions, and it hasn't really bothered her. Hmm.

Oh, and I also use whatever conditioner I have on hand (usually Suave). Doesn't matter if the shampoo is tear-free when the combing causes its own trauma!

So is Johnson's Tear Free Shampoo(yes, the same one we've all been using all these years) not safe? Not sarcastic, really want to know for my kid's sake.

Johnsons may not be as safe as we thought...

Baby wash, shampoo contains cancer-causing chemicals, group says

By Lyndsey Layton

The Washington Post

March 13, 2009

WASHINGTON — More than half the baby shampoo, lotions and other infant-care products analyzed by a health advocacy group were found to contain trace amounts of two chemicals that are believed to cause cancer, the organization said Thursday.

Some of the biggest names on the market, including Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo and Baby Magic lotion, tested positive for 1,4-dioxane or formaldehyde or both, the non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reported.

The chemicals, both characterized as probable carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency, are not added intentionally to products and appear to be byproducts of the manufacturing process.

The organization tested 48 baby bath products. Of those, 32 contained trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane and 23 contained small amounts of formaldehyde. Seventeen products tested positive for both chemicals.

"Our intention is not to alarm parents but to inform parents that products that claim to be gentle and pure are contaminated with carcinogens, which is completely unnecessary," said Stacy Malkan, a spokeswoman for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Companies that manufacture and sell products tested by the group said they comply with government standards.

"The FDA and other government agencies around the world consider these trace levels safe, and all our products meet or exceed the regulatory requirements," Johnson & Johnson said. "We are disappointed that the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has inaccurately characterized the safety of our products, misrepresented the overwhelming consensus of scientists and government agencies that review the safety of ingredients, and unnecessarily alarmed parents."

So we are now worrying about BPA in #7 organic Gerber baby food containers/formula containers, toxins in pressed woods, jet fuel in water and formula, cancer causing ingredients in baby products (including but not limited to shampoo and sunscreen) that have been used for years and whether or not we use all organic fruits & veggies!!!!

Yet we put our kids in cabs with no car seats and let them wander the neighborhood!

I totally get your point and am not normally an alarmist, but now I'm really scared about Johnson's Baby Shampoo.

Johnson's is fine. There are groups that want to put the fear of God in you about "toxins". The truth is, they too often react out of an emtional and not scientific perspective. Take a previous post that says shampoos contain formaldehyde. Yes, some do contain trace amounts. But you breathe in comparatively so much more that your shampoo is a minute fraction. And your body produces and eliminates formaldehyde every day of your life. So yes, formaldehyde can be bad for you in large quantities. But the tiny amount in shampoo does not matter to your health. The same goes for many of the other "toxins" out there.

We use Weleda shampoo.
