Buy new furniture or use that money to upgrade bathroom?

Anonymous
I need to upgrade my furnitures as well as my bathroom. At this point I don't have money for both. I would like to buy pre-owned furnitures to minimize cost so I can upgrade bathroom. My family members have not agreed to this. Am I being cheap? If I wait I will be able to buy new furnitures later. To me it is not about money, I would like to be able to change furnitures without feeling guilty about it.

I feel about furniture the same way I do new cars. The depreciation once you take them out of the store kills you.

If you can find affordable new furniture or clean attractive used furniture I say go for it. Craigslist is full of "paid $3000 at Haverty's" and they have to give it away......

I have furnished almost my entire house with Craigslist and estate sales, and it may be cheap, but it looks great!

I have also furnished my house with at least 75% Craigslist/Facebook buys and got such nicer quality stuff than I could have otherwise afforded new. It's amazing the like-new stuff that is out there if you're willing to look for it. Craigslist/Facebook is no "garage sale" quality, there is some ritzy stuff for sale.

Very smart to buy quality second hand.

My entire house is craigslist, but it doesn't look cheap at all. WAY better quality than your average Haverty/Ethan Allen furniture. I'm very good at decorating and it all looks really unique and fab.

Who are these family members who haven't agreed to it? Kids? At most it should only be your and your DH's decision.

I would always renovate the bathroom over new furniture.

I totally agree with this. In this area if you are patient and thorough you can find some beautiful furniture on Craigslist. With the amount of wealth and the transient nature of the residents, people are getting rid of stuff all the time that is gorgeous and pennies on the dollar to what it cost new.

My mom thinks I am being cheap and my DH agreed with her. My children have outgrown baby furnitures, which I will give away. Those baby furnitures were expensive when I bought. I need 2 sets of furnitures for 2 kids. Good quality will cost me $5000.00 or more. Thank you everyone for your advice.

Well, you are are being cheap if by cheap they mean frugal and not needlessly wasting money which is what buying new furniture is. You can be discerning and tasteful and still buy furniture off CL. Hard to believe but oh so true.

+1 to everything everyone said about craigslist. Just get new mattresses.

Also, bathroom renovations don't have to be incredibly expensive. We completely redid a small one for about three grand.

The plural of furniture is furniture.

What is this Craigslist/Facebook stuff? Is there a Facebook for Craigslist I'm missing/

I think people are talking about items that are for sale on Craigslist or on neighborhood groups on Facebook.

I would not buy a sofa or mattress used.

Everything else you can get excellent quality second hand. Paint, stain, change the hardware, do whatever you need to to make it more suited to your personal taste.

Just completed furnishing our entire house through CL.

Got some amazing deals on quality furniture in great condition. The only things we bought new were mattresses and this had more to do with our own biases as opposed to objective reasoning on why we should not have just gone with used.

I'm too freaked about bedbugs to buy anything upholstered secondhand.
