How do you get someone to stop driving

Anonymous
My FIL is handicapped and his health has been getting worse. He has been driving very erratically with several accidents including hitting the garage twice. My MIL would like to him to stop driving but he refuses. Is there anything that can be done before he hurts himself or others?

Call his doctor, call his local police station, call his car insurance company....

Disable the car, if you think you can get away with it.

show him news clippings of people who shouldn't be driving hitting more than the garage. My dad was killed by an elderly person who should not have been driving (and who never drove after). I wish his family would've done more to stop him before it happened. Now they all have to live with that and we have to live without him.

I had "the talk" with my parents. Asked for their keys. They said no. Brother disconnected the car battery.

What alternative did you give them to get around?

Ask him how he would feel if he killed someone. If he hit a person rather than the garage. He is playing with fire.

If he lives in MoCo, you could set him up with Uber - just make arrangements with the driver.

Or look into other services:

For my father, we found out that the local sheriff could demand a driving test. We asked him to do this, and my father's license was taken away. The driving tester said it was one of the scariest tests of his life. My dad still thinks he drives just fine.

I called my father's doctor and explained the situation. He gave my dad a referral for a driver's exam. I told my dad that if he wanted to continue driving, he had to pass the test per doctor's orders. This took the pressure off me.
Good luck.

Have his doctor notify the DMV. Or do it yourself.

If his father injures or kills himself or someone else, this will be irrelevant.

You need to give them an alternative, like the PP who suggested Uber.

You think you're all tough and everything, but your approach is doomed, and will create more drama than necessary. Think more broadly.

You're not much of a problem-solver, are you?

You don't have a really stubborn father, do you?
