My son wants to go to Thomas Jefferson High School and he is entering 8t grade. Can anyone recommend good ways to prepare for the exam and how their child was accepted. He is very STEM orientated and loves work. I can use all the information someone has on anything about TJ. Thank you |
try in the AAP thread. |
^ and expect a lot of BS posts. |

Our middle school has a TJ test camp that is 2 weeks long. Too bad for you that it began last week. Maybe you could call your MS and ask about resource GL. |
Would it not be better to have your child take the test without preparation to ensure that they will be successful at TJ? I have a 7th grader who
Will probably have a chance at admission and I've been thinking IF she does well on her own without prep she would do better without being so stressed if she gets in.thoughts? I want her to be happy and successful in high school and at this point I'm no sure where she should be |
The test is really not that difficult a test. There are sample questions on the TJ website that you could show to your child. My child looked at those and did no other prep and was accepted.
The best advice would be to pay attention and do well in school, read a lot, and be involved in out of school activities. A child who reads a lot will know how to write well enough to do well on the essays, no need for special instruction. They are asked to write about their favorite activities, both in and out of school. My child wrote about the sport that he spent 15+ hours a week doing and his interest and knowledge of his sport must have been apparent. Encourage your child to do what he truly likes to do, not what may appear to be "good" for admissions. |
A TJ prep camp? That sounds awful. Which MS is this? |
It's not awful. It's informative. They did a lot of math review. Apparently the camp was not at your MS. |

My DS (rising junior at TJ with straight A's) did a TJ test prep class at Dalby tutoring in McLean. It looks like Kate Dalby has started her own business https://katedalby.com/
Would he have gotten in without it? Probably, but he was better prepared and more relaxed for the test after taking the class. |
A thousand dollars on prep? Wow. |
Which is why I asked where it was. I've never heard such a thing and hard to imagine FCPS would condone a TJ prep camp at a middle school. So which one was it? Or is that a secret? |
NP here -- ACE had offered a summer 2-week TJ Test Prep class in the past at area middle schools, including Herndon MS, Rocky Run MS, as well as some high schools including Oakton, Woodson, and Robinson SS. I suggest checking the ACE course listings online to see where they may be offered in the future. |
I teach high school math and think you are approaching this perfectly. |
