| Does this sound safe. It would be 10mg in morning and 10mg before bed for an 11 year old with severe seasonal allergies and contact dermatitis. Has anyone give this much daily to their child? |
| PRobably - I either do a dose of Zyrtec in the AM and or Zyrtec in the AM and Benadryl at night. |
For you or for your child? |
| You'd take medical advice from Internet strangers but not a doctor? |
|
I'm an adult and for a while I took 10 mg 2x a day-- now I take 10 mg once a day and 10 mg 2x a day when my allergies are acting up.
I would think it's fine for a 11 yo (but I do not even play a dr on tv). |
The package says do not exceed 10mg in 24 hours for a child. The doctor made the suggestion like "you could try..." as he was just listing all sorts of ideas. I didn't think it was a big deal until I read the package. |
| i an adult woman and take only a 5 mg children's dose. |
Just wanted to add I didn't want to bother the doctor and do an "emergency" call since he made the recommendation. I was waiting to try 20 mg until I was desperate and this seems to be a bad few days for season allergies. DC was complaining incessantly about allergies about 6 hours after the first dose today so for the first time before bed I gave DC a second dose. Then I read the package and second guessed myself. |
21:01 here-- IME it is not unusual for a dr to tell you to it's ok to exceed the OTC recommended limits for some medications. ISTR at one point I had a script for a high dose of zantac and my SO had a script for a high dose of ibuprofen. I would definitely take the advice of a dr over the instructions on the box (but as I said my own allergist gave me the same recommendation of 10 mg 2x a day). |
you must not have severe allergies |
OP here. Thanks. This is helpful. I take 10mg in the morning and on a really, really bad day might then take Benadryl at night, but I am a full grown adult. Between the package and the fact my kid took more zyrtec than I did today I second guessed my choice to try this suggestion. |
| Zyrtec is fine. Also it was the first by the fda approved for kids. But be careful -- a common side effect is hyperactivity. |
LOL. Oh n!. DC is hyper without zyrtec. The usual dose of 10mg doesn't make the hyperactivity worse, but I guess tomorrow morning I'll learn if 20mg does it. |
| DD just a bit older has allergies and takes allegra 180 mg. It is supposed to be once a day but the allergist said it was fine to take two on bad days. |
| My allergist has recommended 2 doses of OTC allergy meds per day when allergies are bad. (Twice the limit on the package). Allergist said in Europe the higher dosing is recommended. Not sure about that, but, I've taken two per day many times (separated by 12 hours). Adult woman, though. |
