Anyone have kids at Marie Reed? I see there is a dual language option but there is also English only. Does everyone do dual language?
Thanks! |
| No, not everyone does it, because my everyone gets into it. |
| In Early Childhood, there are a total of 6 classes, 4 are Dual Language and 2 are English Only. For students in K-5, 2 classrooms are DL and 1 classroom is EO. While the DL program has more children because across both classrooms, the EO classrooms often have the highest number of students in one class. |
| ^Sorry for the typo! |
Thanks so much for this response. We're moving IB for marie reed and my dd will be in 3rd grade. she has never been dual language before so I don't really want her to start now and feel left behind. But I also don't want her to be the only one....not sure what to do. |
| Unless you are very committed to dual language, is it a good idea to start in 3rd grade? |
Go visit school and ask to be put in touch with PTA or parents of kids in the English only group. |
I'm not at all committed. I don't want to send her dual language but that's what everyone recommends in the neigjborhood. |
| It's probably where all the higher SES families choose to go. |
It doesn't matter - at third grade they won't LET you into dual language. |
Good to know. Thanks. Any idea if the kids in EO are from families who are as driven and interested in learning as the DL families? Like do people choose EO on purpose? |
I'm confident that there are many, many families who are "driven and interested in learning" in every school in DC. I think what you really want to know if people with higher incomes and more education send their kids to Marie Reed English track for 3rd grade. Right? |
Yes. Any idea? |
| Marie Reed is one of those schools that is dual language by default, not by choice. You'll find that most of the parents in the "target language" are illiterate in both Spanish and English. |

Yes, families choose EO for a reason. Often, students speak a language at home that is neither English nor Spanish. Juggling three languages (Native language, English, Spanish) is a lot for a student.
As well, many Spanish speaking families choose to place their kids in the EO program because 100 percent of the instruction is in English. Families continue teaching Spanish to their children, but are invested in providing as much English exposure as possible to their children. Marie Reed may have a high population of English language learners, but the DL program is a full fledged program. Our families are awesome and we always use a positive approach when speaking about them! You can find PTA contact information on the Reed website : mariereedes.org |
