Wisdom Tooth Erupting

Anonymous
Anyone had this happen as an adult? My wisdom tooth is coming in and it's SO painful! My entire jaw/cheek is sore & I can barely open it. Any idea how long this could last or when it might feel better?

I am 38. One came in when I was 35 and one is coming in now. It was really sore until is broke through the gum and now is less sore even though it's clearly still coming in. But it took about a month to finally break through. But my whole jaw and cheek weren't sore ... do you want to check with the dentist re: infection?

I had one come in during my 20s. My jaw was a bit sore, but not too bad. It was noticeable but not problematic. I'd be a bit concerned if it's that bad.

What the hell? There are people who don't get these taken out as an 18 year old??

You can't get them taken out if they don't erupt.

That's not true. I had all 4 removed when I was 17 and only 1 had started to come through. My bottom two were impacted and would have never made it through.

Why get them removed if they're not causing trouble? My wisdom tooth erupted, was fine for years even though it was unopposed, and then cracked one day. I eventually had it pulled after that.

Wisdom teeth were for when our jaws were much larger (think caveman days). In todays world, they are useless and our jaws are smaller than when they once were. This causes wisdom teeth to grow into a very tight space. Often times there may be no pain or trouble now but eventually, there will be. Wisdom teeth grow in crooked, a toothbrush cant properly brush back there causing decay, the roots are so big that they grow into the jaw or inter twine with the existing roots. Much easier and safer to get them all taken out(be it causing trouble or not), as a teen.

OP, see a dentist.

This might be true for some people, but many people have healthy wisdom teeth. Really depends on your jaw.

OP see a dentist PRONTO! There can be issues with infections in wisdom teeth when they erupt. You also might be effecting the other teeth- resulting in the rest of your teeth moving. We are done with braces, so that would be serious for us.

DH doesn't have his wisdom teeth taken out (thanks in-laws!) and he's 30. The dentist and us watch them closely. If you haven't had them removed you have higher chances of cancer there.

I've never met anyone with healthy wisdom teeth. Before the mass removal of wisdom teeth, most people lost a lot of teeth before they were middle aged.

Age 58. I have one wisdom tooth. The other 3 were never there. The tooth is fine and came in during my late teen years.

Yep! The majority of my class had them out at 16/17. Weekly there was someone out.
