My knees are falling apart

Anonymous
Its like a switch went off a couple years ago with my knees. They are always sore and inflamed. I do not remember any actual injury and hoping it is not arthritis but fear it may be. Any suggestions on treatment. I am not looking to take drugs to manage.

Are you a former runner? They may just be worn out. I would suggest consulting an orthopedic surgeon. They don't necessarily prescribe surgery.

Cortisone shots. Make sure you use an othopedic surgeon for the shot. The ones they have given me seem to last the longest.

Don't start cortisone. It isn't for the long term and actually thins out tendons and only masks the pain. I would recommend it more so for an injury, but not for arthritis...if that is what it is. Get a diagnosis and go from there. I found an interesting treatment to deal with my arthritis. Doesn't take it away completely but manages the pain and the bad flare up days. It is a natural, easy, at home treatment. Has great reviews and if you are looking to avoid drugs, it is something to try. I also got mine covered by insurance.

Please see an orthopedic surgeon. I have pretty bad arthritis in my knee, and have done really well with some physical therapy and a trainer. I also have done short cycles of medication (naprocin or ibuprofen), four days on, four days off, which helps to reduce inflammation if it's very bad.

I do agree with the cold wraps mentioned above for natural pain relief. It may get past the point though. Look into a good doctor and see what they think. It is best to know what you are dealing with.

Did you get tested for lyme disease?

OP here, I hope it is not Lyme disease! I don't have any other symptoms and the joint pain seems to only be my knees.
Has anyone used the King Brand ColdCure wraps mentioned previously? I have tried cold in the past but only used ice packs or a frozen bag of peas. Maybe something designed for the knee would be better for now.

Have you ever actually had the shot??? My arthritis is so bad that the shot and ice are the only things that allow me to walk!

OP go to the doctor. Get a medical diagnosis, not some regurgitation from a businees website.

I was on statins, which made my mild osteoarthritis much much worse. I thought I was going to have to get a handicapped parking permit! Went off them & feel 1000x better. Agree, go to an ortho doc

I'm on crutches right now because my left knee gave out. My knees have always been "creaky", and the last two years we've lived in a weird split ranch where everything is a half floor away, and I think all these stairs have done me in. And of course dh is gone for 3 weeks and we have little kids (slight hijack, since I'm a few years from 50, but my knees feel much older!). Anyway, just empathy op, and I recommend figuring out a solution before the whole knee goes. I can't stand or walk without crutches right now and it sucks!!!

My knees ache and feel weak after I eat gluten. No problems if I skip the wheat.

PP, all gluten?

I do somewhat agree with what the link above says about cortisone how it should not be used over and over and of course there are potential risks with it. Get a diagnosis, decide with your doctor where to go from there.

Go to a doctor, but while you are waiting for an appointment, try applying ice. Buy two of those large ice pads. I have had bad knees since my 20s, and when they act up, it is amazing how much difference applying ice can make. Ice at least every night, twice a day if possible. Never longer for 20 minutes. Make sure to use a cover or a cloth over the ice pad or you can harm your skin.

Even if it does not work, at least it will be one more thing to tell the doctor. They will ask what you have done to alleviate the pain.
