My 12 yr old niece is visiting for a week during her summer break. She has to have a low sodium diet because of a kidney disorder. I've got plenty of low sodium recipes to cook at home, but I'm struggling to figure out where to go on night we pln to eat out. Any suggestions on restaurants near Eastern Market and Chinatown that have low sodium kid friendly options? |
Sushi without the soy sauce?
My mom has high blood pressure and she usually requests "no salt" at restaurants where menu items are made to order. |
This website lets you search "sodium savvy" restaurants by zip code:

I would ask her parents for their tips on how to handle restaurants/what types of food are best. |
OP here. Thanks for the tips. I'll check out that website. Regarding her parents, they don't have money to eat out often and have done a very poor job at monitoring her diet, so much so that she's been hospitalized every few months the past year. I'm hoping we can do better while she's with us. |
I would suggest picking smaller restaurants that are more 'cook to order' type places -- where you could order things that aren't pre-made and ask the waiter/chef to modify the dish and seasoning to avoid salt.
Things like chicken breast, pizza, etc. The amount of sodium you get in "real" food is low compared to processed items, for the most part and is easily adjustable as the dish is prepared. |
That's rough, OP. It's definitely helpful when a family can educated as a whole on how to eat right, especially kidney related ailments can be tough. I found this guide on eating out from the kidney foundation that might be helpful: https://www.kidney.org/sites/default/files/11-10-0405_diningout.pdf Since she's 12, she's going to need learn what she can eat and ideally how to prepare foods. However, if you live with people not making healthy choices, that makes it especially difficult if not impossible. |
