We're moving into an old house that needs quite a bit of renovation work - including a complete kitchen remodel. No dishwasher currently.
We have a 1.5 and 3.5 year old, and it seems that our dishwasher gets run at least once a day. We know that the kitchen remodel will take some time, as the cabinet order time alone is almost 2 months. We don't feel like we can survive without a dishwasher that long. Options are: 1) Get a used, portable dishwasher (roll-up kind) from craigslist until we remodel. These seem to sell for about $200 used. Kind of a pain, but beats having nothing. 2) Buy the dishwasher we would plan to have after the remodel now, have it installed knowing that we'll likely have to reinstall it later when the kitchen is reconfigured. I'm not sure how much a new dishwasher install costs (with no direct water lines running to it, etc). That may help decide - but do I need a plumber and an appliance guy? Will one of them be willing to pull out a cabinet to replace with the dishwasher? |
Live with a portable until the remodel |
We lived with no dishwasher for the first 6 years we owned our house. I LOVE our dishwasher now, but it really wasn't that bad going without. For a few months or even a year, I'd just wash everything by hand. |
Call a plumber. We had this same situation when we moved into our house, and we ended up paying $300 to get the temporary plumbing done to get our dishwasher installed temporarily. To each his own I guess, but for me it was well worth it to not have to do dishes by hand (or deal with a portable) for six months. |
