How much to give to nephew for wedding

Anonymous
In our culture, we give a lot for weddings especially close family.

I married in 1998 and my sister and brother in law gave me $2500 for my wedding.
Now her son is getting married. An inflation calculator shows this equals about $3600 in today's dollars. So, how much should I give?

A sister is a closer relationship than a nephew? Yes no? Do I give less then?
my sister is a decade older so when she married, I was 10 so I didn't give her a cash gift.

$5,001.

Because your nephew will give to your children. You do not return to older relatives who give gift, you reciprocate to their children.

Can you afford to give $2500?

Does she have other children? If so, keep in mind that whatever you give to your nephew will likely mean you need to give the same amount to her other children. I would factor that into your decision.

Yes one other but marriage may not happen for the other, though it may.

Yikes, this seems overkill. There is also a shower I will likely spend $1500-2000 on plus an engagement party.

Did you just start this thread to have an audience listen to you talk about spending thousands of dollars for a wedding?
