| My daughter had her first day at Steve and Kate's camp at Brent - she absolutely loved it and can't wait to go back today! It really seems well run, and the activities that are available for the kids are great. She came home wearing the red "cloak" that she made, told me about the songs she sang in the Karaoke station, and informed me that today she is going to make bread because she got to taste some that a friend made, and it was "awesome"! I know it has only been one day, but I am really pleased to have this option this summer - reasonably priced and so, so flexible. |
| That's great. My friend did Steve & Kate's last year in Virginia, and his kids loved it. I thought they only had options in upper NW, so glad to see they are moving into other parts of the city. |
| How old is your DD? |
| 6.5 |
Oops, That's not we heard... Nothing specific though. |
Karaoke station?? Can someone let me know what exactly this camp is all about ? |
| During the day, camp sends you links via email to the songs your kids has sung (if they happen to do karaoke). Got a terribly/awesome rendition of One Direction's "story of my life" yesterday afternoon! |

I have a rising kindergartener who is on his 3rd day of Steve and Kate's and is having a blast. He's enjoyed making cinnamon buns, playing with the legos, riding the electric scooters.
As a parent, I've been pleased with their responsiveness and attentiveness, especially to the younger campers. He had a slight injury that they bandaged and informed me about, created a "downtime" area to read books in the afternoon, and encouraged him to make new friends. All positive! |
| My girls have had a great time too. My younger daughter is very shy, so it has been very helpful that she can hang with her older sister, until she is ready to venture out on her own, without being pushed or required to stay with kids her own age. I do wish they had a NW or NE location, however. They said that they are open to other locations if they get parent help for suggestions. |
| Anyone have older kids who participated in these camps? I've got an 11 year old and need to find three days of camp for her. |
| I love their current location because its so close to a metro stop. |
| Where are you coming from though? I live in Brookland and work downtown and consider the location not very doable. Brookland - Cap South (involves transfer) - > Farragut? I feel like that would take 1.5 hours. Great if you live on the Hill though. |
I was not impressed. |

I love this camp - I work part time, and couldn't find any other camp that would allow a partial week. I love the flexibility, the creative atmosphere and unusual activities, the attentive staff, and the fact that they feed the kids. The meals themselves are great - one day is French, one Mexican, one Asian, etc - introduces kids to the idea of trying different things. My younger son (8) used to hate going to camp and he is happy here. The older one (10) doesn't get bored. I love that the kids are not grouped by age, but by interest. My two boys can hang out together, which has made the process of going to a new camp quite easy. The only downside for me is the Capitol Hill location - whew! What a drive!! But the hours are also great - you can drop off and pick up anywhere from 7:30 to 6 pm. My boys are not into sports, but this camp gives them outdoor play options as well as activities ranging from Legos to making short videos to bread making (they love this) or recording music. As I wasn't certain about my work schedule, I bought the summer membership, and since I'm not using up all the days, they are going to refund me any remaining time left - also a great stress relief. This is a camp that started in California and it has that west coast vibe (all good from my perspective).
Notably, they say they are flexible and always looking for new locations, so if a few people ask them to do a camp in NW DC next year, it's a possibility. Write to steveandkate@steveandkate.com, address to Meghan Perez. I would love to drive less than this year, though even with the drive, it is worth it to be able to have this kind of flexibility schedule-wise. |
| Thanks, PP! I will email them and ask about a NW location for next year. |
