Grown sheep, AKA mutton, is tough and gamey. Definitely an acquired taste. Lil' dead baby sheep, OTOH, are delicious!

PP is correct. Traditionally, “lamb” means the meat of a sheep in its first year of life (i.e not an adult). The adult version is “mutton”.

They don't slaughter it when it's 5 days old or something. They let it grow for quite a while, it gets big. It's just not super old and tough.

I didn't get this either as a kid; I thought Penny just needed some kind of operation and because she was poor she couldn't afford it. I thought the whole "folding table and a dirty knife" just meant that it was a sketchy doctor who charged low rates. When I watched it as a adult, I got it of course.
