2026-2027 calendar updates

In that case I think MCEA should call his bluff. This situation isn't their fault. Tell him if he wants the start of the school year to be a total $!t show he can own it.

I think obviously the best option is to use days scheduled for religious observance.

Except that MCPS has clearly indicated it has no intention of using those religous makeup days. So if you opt for an option that isn't given you are basically opting for the status quo we had this year of all MCPS kids getting shortchanged instructional days.

+1 I don't know why people are suggesting options here that MCPS has no intention of following.

I think the proposal is to use 1-2 scheduled days off as regular school days, not makeup days.

And which religious holidays are going to be dumped for that to happen? Because it will likely never happen.

2-3 days here or there make no difference to education. Kids are not being shortchanged by calendar changes. They’re being shortchanged by being addicted to cell phones and MCPS along with parents looking the other way. Y’all get riled up about the wrong things

The recommended calendar update doesn't change the number of scheduled school days. It will still be 181 scheduled days of school, same as this year. Just 3 days earlier.

That's your opinion. Many others would disagree. Massachusetts schedules 184 days a year and has among the highest performing states in terms of educational outcomes in the country.

You just want to take the lazy way out by blaming "cell phone addiction." And you're wrong, because there are a lot of little kids with no cell phones in MCPS who are still not achieving grade level standards.

+1 Just because you think a religious holiday shouldn't be observed, doesn't mean that MCPS is going to follow your opinion.

DP. The BOE's own policy states that schools can't be closed for observance of religious holidays, but only for operational reasons.

Yes, that's why we have the fiction of "non-instructional days" that just happen to fall on Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah and Eid. But that doesn't mean those days weren't chosen because they were religious holidays or that MCPS is going to use those makeup days just because you wish it were so.

It's that some religious holidays (not all) lead to a significant number of absences, therefore there are operational impacts. See?

+1 also the 30,000 Muslims in Montgomery County are not evenly distributed among schools. There's almost certainly an operational impact on Eid. Certainly not in every classroom.

And there's certainly not an "operational impact" in every classroom on Yom Kippur or Rosh Hashanah. But some religions are more equal than others in MCPS's eyes.

Agree - just get rid of transition day.

Also they should convert the Wednesday before thanksgiving to a half day.

That’s two days right there.

And make Dec. 23rd a half day. Now you have your three days. Done.
They could get rid of transition day but the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and December 23 are high absence non quality days to have school. Instead remove 11/9 as an off day and set 3/9 and 4/22 as possible makeup days. Make the 1Q grading day a half day or two since that is in the fall to build in another day.

But that would involve providing more instructional time than what is currently in the calendar. That's a big no-go for MCPS. They would rather wait for the snow days to happen and then spend weeks going back and forth about whether they will use makeup days and/or extend the school year while insisting they shouldn't have to do any of that and the state will grant a waiver.

Those three days could be in place instead of starting the year 3 school days earlier, and so they could end earlier as they wish to do. Still only 181 days.
