Wow who knew the sleeper hit of this thread would be that Austrians are rude! I had no idea. Lots of hits on google. "why are austrians rude" I'll let you know what I find out. Maybe stems from being an EX-empire? |
I try not to write off any place I've only been once so with that said I wish I never had to go back to Scottsdale, Orlando, Las Vegas, and maybe most of Nashville.
I have no idea how Nashville got to be a trendy city. It's a gentrified strip of bachelor and bachelorette parties that is accessible unless you have a car and can drive to gentrified boutiques and southern restaurants. It is not remotely walkable, the weather isn't great, and the people who visit are a menace to the actual people who live there. Internationally I have this far enjoyed most places but obviously the US based conference circuit hasn't taken me to as many mid-size international destinations. There are definitely some I don't think I'd want to spend weeks in but I don't even want to spend hours in Nashville. |
?? Moldova is a beautiful place to live in and to visit. |
Oh honey, it's the libs who made NYC great. Media, fine art, design, fashion, music are all owned by the libs. |
And literature! |
NP and another downvote for Orlando, Florida. Now visited for the 5th time in as many years (retired family friends live there) and I’m smugly proud to say that I’ve never visited Disney. Can’t stand that Disney is overpriced and terribly complicated and has taken over Orlando. Traffic and heat plus overcrowded equals my travel nightmare.

I didn't care for Paris. Too ancient looking for me! I didn't like their sandwiches with thick buttered bread and hardly any cheese or meat. No ice in drinks. Milk purchased on the shelf at room temperature. Their pastries and confections were beautiful looking, but the taste did not equal the appearance. And the Mona Lisa was small! |
Fascinating! Paris is one of my favorite places in the world. What DID you like? |
I recently spent a week in Moldova and really enjoyed it. The people were nice and friendly. Chișinău was clean, had nice parks and was highly walkable. Moldova is known for its red wines and has the largest wine cave in the world. The food was actually an unexpected highlight. I was inspired to go because I enjoyed ten days in Romania last autumn. Moldovans speak Romanian and used to be part of Romania, so it’s very similar culturally. I really enjoy going off the beaten path places. I especially enjoyed the lack of tourists, though I did see some tourists, including a few Americans. I live in Europe so it was an easy trip for me. |
Bill Bryson once wrote that Austria is beautiful, the only problem with it is it's filled with f***ing Austrians! I did a day trip from Munich to Salzburg last year. My stop in a cafe wasn't the most welcoming experience, but I wasn't screamed at. The atmosphere later in the day once the St. Rupert Day festivities were under way was more enjoyable. Liters of beer and carnival rides make even the most hardened Austrians mildly friendly, I suppose. |
Charlotte. What a bland, sprawling suburban hellscape. The Applebee's of American cities. |
You think Paris is “ancient”? Have you been to Rome? Greece? |
I went to Austria and have nothing negative to say about the people. Hallstatt was beautiful. |
This. And don’t go expecting “pretty.” It’s gritty! But if you’re adventurous there’s lots to do and see and experience. |
I love Los Angeles. And all its burbs.
I didn't love Orlando, Florida. |
