Fresno City Council candidate sparks controversy over sex offender status

FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Several Fresno city leaders spoke out Thursday at City Hall over the candidacy of Rene Campos, a registered sex offender running for Fresno City Council District 7.

“It has come to my attention and even hit national news that we have a registered sex offender that is currently running for Fresno City Council. While I respect anybody's ability to serve our community, I find this quite disturbing,” said Councilmember Annalisa Perea.

Campos’ candidacy has sparked controversy within the public eye.

Councilmembers say they are considering legislation aimed at preventing registered sex offenders from holding public office.

“I think if you want to be an effective council member, you need, at the very least, to be able to go on school campuses. I would like to know that I can bring my children into City Hall,” Councilmember Perea said.

Last week, former State Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis was sentenced to probation and community service after being convicted of four felonies including Attempt to Influence a Public Official. She made a horrible mistake, and she was wrong. I hope she learns from this and can rebuild her life. As someone who has known Sonya as a friend for many years, on a personal level I was glad to hear she isn’t going to prison which is a hard place for anyone, no less a retired 68-year old pharmacist. But it is not lost on me that she was convicted of the exact same felony charge as Tina Peters — attempting to influence a public official — and yet Tina Peters, as a non-violent first time offender got a nine year sentence. Justice in Colorado and America needs to be applied evenly, you never know when you might need to depend on the rule of law. This is the context I am using as I consider cases like this that have sentencing disparities, which is why I have extended the deadline for clemency applications until April 3rd. I will be making decisions on these cases throughout the remainder of my governorship.

Court documents show that the Pennsylvania State Police Gettysburg Station received a ChildLine report for a victim on February 24, 2026. The report alleged that Carr and the victim, who is now an adult, began communicating when the victim was a minor.

The report also alleged that the victim and Carr used the video-chatting app Skype to communicate, exchange intimate images, and engage in sexual acts, according to court documents.

The report noted that Carr volunteered with Gettysburg High School musicals when the victim was a teenager and that the two worked together at Gettysburg Community Theatre.

According to court documents, the report shows Carr treated the victim differently from other students during their sophomore and junior years of high school. The report claims he was “very kind” and gave the victim a lot of attention.

The two allegedly began communicating via Facebook Messenger and Skype after Carr asked them how to get in touch, court documents show.

Police said the conversations that occurred on Skype were allegedly sexual conversations that began when the victim was 16 or 17, between 2012 and 2013. Court documents show that the report stated the conversations turned into the sharing of explicit images and explicit calls.
