7th grader taking 8th grade honors algebra.
Score 494. How does that translate into content mastery? Two areas were very high; functions/statistics was pass proficient. Is that an acceptable enough score to move into geometry for 8th grade? Grades are solid with an uptick at the end of the year. How does the Algebra SOL score count for high school credit? We are used to elementary where SOLs don't really matter. |

Your 7th grader is not taking 8th grade hnr algebra - math classes are not by grade, but level.
Algebra can be taken whenever a student is ready for it. 7th grader or 10th grade or anywhere in between. |
Actually, yes. My 7th grader is taking 8th grade honors algebra. Kid was put into the 8th grade honors class by the counselors. |
That being said, the placement is not the question. The question is how does the SOL relate to the class and credit for the class (see questions above). |
I know that 7th graders take Honors Algebra, I was pointing out that they don't take 8th grade honors Algebra - it's just Honors Algebra as a 7th grader. Also, the counselor didn't "place" your child in the class, based on your students SOL & Iowa test scores as a 6th grader you were recommended the class. You could have turned it down. you should have gotten you class schedule for next year already, if you don't want your student in the class assigned, you can call over the summer and go down a level. To just Geometry instead of Honors Geometry. Your student still passed the SOLs, just not Pass Advance. Go hang out at the AAP board if you want to share scores. |
He passed the SOL, so he gets a Verified Credit (VC) for HS diploma requirements. He should still be able to take Geometry Honors next year. FYI, some MS do not segregate 7th graders and 8th graders in separate Algebra Honors classes- so classes are a mix of 7th and 8th graders. |

I am not going to argue this with you as you do not know what class my kid is taking and I do.
Please do not respond to this thread anymore as you are not contributing anything helpful. You are just posting to argue. If you are able to explain the answers to my question I welcome it, but I do not want to argue. |
Thankd you! So it just goes on the transcript as if a box is checked? |
I don't understand what you are trying to ask. |
Which MS has separate 7th grade and 8th grade Algebra Honors classes? |
Sorry. I worded that statement poorly. If I am understanding you correctly, they just need to meet a requirement of passing the SOLs to receive credit but it does not matter how they passed. So a skin of the teeth pass proficient is listed the same as a pass advanced? (The box is checked so you get credit) Or is there a distinction on the transcript between pass proficient/advanced? |
Yes, it is. But I would pay attention and make sure your kid is really mastering the material. Algebra 11 is hard, especially for a ninth grader getting used to high school. I wouldn't look at the sol score, but I would look hard at the solid but not fantastic grades. |

Thanks! From the SOLs, two areas were mastered but one (functions) was a little weaker. Most grades were very good but were lowered due to early disorganization and lacking now and then. We are keeping our options open for the high school track. Since we have a whole year to figure this out we are trying to get enough facts so when the time comes to make a decision we have all the info. I think that fcps could do a better job of explaining the math track and how these middle school classes apply to high school credits and the math sequence as a whole. I think many parents are like us and just going with the flow. |

It is on the website. http://www.fcps.edu/is/math/middleschool/documents/MSCourseSequence.pdf |
