Recommended elementary schools in Vienna

Anonymous
We are moving to the area over the summer, and looking at Vienna as a possible option. I will be working near Tyson's and DH near Reston. We are considering both Reston and Vienna. We have a rising 5th grader and 3rd grader who are currently in GT where we live, and therefore probably qualify for AAP. We are looking for a good school pyramid, and a child friendly neighborhood that has good activities for my kids.

Please suggest areas in Reston and Vienna that would be suitable, and good elementary LIV centers, that also have a good middle school and high school?

Anywhere in the Town of Vienna that feeds in to Vienna, Cunningham Park, Louise Archer will have Louise Archer as the Level IV center, followed by Thoreau and Madison. You can't ask for much better than that.

Wolftrap Elementary -- off of Beulah Rd (easy access to Reston and Tysons). 100% feeds into Kilmer MS and Madison HS (so your kids will stay with their neighborhood friends). Has Local Level IV.

Westbriar (in the town of Vienna side) is an AAP center. Feeds to Kilmer MS and Madison HS, but there will be some kids from Westbriar that will go to Marshall HS.

will clarify that you could choose a house in the TOV that goes to Westbriar, Kilmer MS, and Madison HS. There are homes that are zoned for Marshall HS.

Oakton elementary is very good. It's very nearby to hunter mill road which you can take to get to Reston and 123 to get to Tysons.

Why bother to post when you get the facts so wrong?

About 35% of Wolftrap goes to Marshall, and most of Westbriar goes to Marshall, including other AAP kids who come from Freedom Hill and Stenwood. Both feed entirely to Kilmer.

If you want the parts of Wolftrap or Westbriar that feed to Madison, you need to look at the boundary maps.

You might also want to look at Souse Village near Wolf Trap (the performing arts center, not the elementary school). It's near Route 7 and the Dulles Toll Road, so convenient to the Reston, and it's zoned for an AAP center (Colvin Run) that feeds into the McLean schools (Longfellow/McLean).

Not necessarily: According to FCPS website for this school year, for Vienna E.S., the AAP center is Louise Archer for grades 3-4, and Colvin Run for grades 5-6. Then the middle school for AAP would either be Jackson or Kilmer, depending on which cohort year the student is in. Theoretically, if the OP wanted the AAP center for both of her kids, depending on how they designate the centers for next school year, the OP could have one child at one AAP center, and one child at another AAP center.

Be sure to check the FCPS website for boundary and school information:
http://boundary.fcps.edu/boundary/

And remember that some schools offer AAP at the base school (LLIV). Not all schools with LLIV at the base school will show up on the FCPS website that way... you may have to narrow down your search and then call each school to see whether it offers LLIV.

Also, if you're going to need SACC (the before/after child care), you will want to get on the wait list as soon as possible. The wait lists move faster at some schools than others...

Good luck, OP... and welcome to the area!

It has very large classes, but it's an awesome school.

Maybe the "Wolftrap is terrible" poster was just referring to the PP's reference to SACC waitlists! In that particular instance, YES, Wolftrap is terrible. On all other counts, not so much.

Colvin Run is great - especially if you work in Tysons. I second Shouse Village!!

I would do a trial run of the commute from Vienna to Reston. It can take quite awhile during rush hour. If your work is in Tysons and dh is in Reston, then I would either live in Reston, Great Falls or McLean not in Vienna. There are very good schools in this area such as Great Falls Elementary, Forestville and Colvin Run Elementary schools.

Are you crazy? I commute from Town of Vienna to near Reston Town Center....it takes me 17 minutes unless there is a weather issue (e.g., snow or lawyers road floods). It does not matter when I leave Vienna or when I leave reston (well, maybe to within 2 minutes).
