Is an ice cream maker worth having?

Anonymous
I love ice cream but want to try making special versions with less sugar and without artificial ingredients. I'm thinking about getting an ice cream maker. Is it worth getting? Or is it to faddish and soon to be at the back of my pantry.

We used it once. Maybe twice.

Our ice cream maker is in the back of our pantry.

For us, the tub needs to be frozen and we do not have a large enough freezer to keep it there.

not sure. I have had one for about 6 years and make ice cream maybe twice a year. and love it! we make simple vanilla and add mint extract, or cookies, or choc chips or coconut extract. it tastes very natural. but ingredients cost more than breyers 1/2 gallon.

I use mine maybe once a month until summer then about once a week. I love ours great investment.

For us yes. We love ice cream. At first I used to make about 1 - 2 times a week, now do about 1 every two weeks. Definitely prefer the stuff I make to the store bought. I make vanilla ice cream, and make it extra creamy and rich. Yum.

Exactly the same for us.

DS and I have started making what I call "cheater ice cream, which is essentially frozen, flavored whipped cream. Nigella has a lot of great recipes. Today we picked strawberries so we made strawberry ice cream this afternoon. We puréed some strawberries, mixed in a can of sweetened condensed milk and some vanilla, and folded in some freshly whipped cream. It took less than 5 minutes to make and will freeze overnight.

We also like to make Popsicles.

If you're eating ice cream anyway it is awesome. We used ours regularly for years until we started cutting back on sugar. Fresh ice cream tastes amazing!

We make lots of slushy slurpy type drinks. Worth it for us.

I'd say I use it 5 times a year and have had it for 5 years. It's not that expensive so I think worth it for us.

I blend up a big can of peaches and mix it with a tub of yogurt. Zero added sugar and it tastes great.

I also make a coconut nutella icecream, which is awesome in a very different way.

Yes! I got one as a gift and I love how easy it is to have super-premium ice cream whenever we have company. It is really quick and easy, but as another PP mentioned, the tub needs to be pre-frozen so you need to plan in advance if you can't keep it in the freezer permanently.
