Separate Double Oven or Range?

Anonymous
Kitchen remodel question:

We’re debating between double ovens and a separate (gas) cooktop. Or a double oven range (either top/bottom or side by side). Double ovens means I lose a pantry (though would have storage above/below and below the cooktop). Side by side range means I lose some counter space.

Thought? Recommendations?

I'm very confused. Why would a side by side mean you lose counter space?

I would do side by side so you get a bigger cooktop

I love having the separate cooktop because I have these really large deep drawers underneath for pots and pans.

Because they are wider than a standard cooktop (30 inches).

For example: http://www.homeportfolio.com/catalog/Product.jhtml?prodId=110288 (48 inches)

Cooktop + double-oven.

OP here. As an aside, I'm wondering if I even NEED a double oven. Would definitely use on Thanksgiving and maybe a couple other times a year but not sure how much more. Still I feel like a nice upgraded kitchen in our size house should have it. Am I being silly?

no it is standard for most decent houses, double oven, built in fridge, 600CFM+ range hood, 36"+ cooking area and separate microwave.

I got a cooktop, an oven, and a convection microwave. It's a great combo and works well on big holidays like thanksgiving and xmas.

We just remodeled our kitchen and I thought about doing the double oven because I see it everywhere and I know it's expected. When push came to shove, though, we decided that the once a year we needed it didn't make it worth losing cabinet and storage space. We did get deep drawers instead of lower cabinets and we love them.

Oh god. "most decent houses". It honestly doesn't matter. It's one of those things that look pretty and can make a kitchen look more high end, but you can do a million other things to establish a high end kitchen too -- things that may be more useful for you. It's unlikely to be a make-or-break fixture when you sell your house. Also, very much depends on your location and resale price point. Houses in the district -- you can go up to $1.5m and nobody would "expect" high end appliances. That price point in Gainesville - you probably need to put in a high end kitchen.

fwiw, our own experience: We renovated a nice house in high end neighborhood out of state a couple years ago and did a double oven. We cook every night and really thought we'd use it a lot. Fast forward 2 years and we had only used it at xmas both years. We had to move this year back to DC, and are renovating the kitchen in our DC townhouse. The kitchen is decently big, but not massive. We weighed the pros and cons of a double oven (pro: double oven; con: loss of pantry space -- which we had some of, but feel like we could always use more). Husband and I didn't have to discuss long and both agreed we could do without the double oven. Interestingly, we also opted for a 30 inch cooktop (versus the 36" we had in the old house) because we'd rather have the counter space.

Love my standard size range with top/bottom double ovens.

A lot of my friends are serious cooks and I really don't know anyone who frequently uses their second oven. I would trade it for a wider range for sure.

This is what I have and I love it - fits all the requirements and doesn't take up too much space.
