| We will be driving north this summer and while we are not sure just how north we will get, we would like a rough itinerary. We will be stopping at a wedding in CT first and then going north. We can go back any way. Our kids are 6, 5 and 2. |
| Northampton, MA |
| North Conway, NH. |
| How long do you have? |
| Do you definitely want to stay inland? If it were me, and it were a longer trip, I would go from CT to Sturbridge for the cute town and meal at Red Lion Inn, then Lexington/Concord for the historical tours and nature, then Ipswich to go to Crane's Beach, then Portland Maine, then end in Bar Harbor. |
| as PP stated, you first need to decide if, by north, you mean, along the coast north, or north into the mountains. Big fan of NE, and it is huge and very diverse. Also I think it depends on if you are more or less "woodsy"! |

Plymouth Massachusetts.
Your older two are the perfect age for Plimoth Plantation. http://www.plimoth.org/ Lots of beaches in that area too. I grew up in a town just north of there called Duxbury. There is a great ice cream shop called FarFars http://www.farfarsicecream.com/ Legendary
You can also go to Boston and do all the Freedom Trail stuff and ride the swan boats. Boston is a great city with kids! |
| Any larger town in NH - 0% sales tax on alcohol! |
This sounds great but how many hours is that driving? I don't think we can do more than six hours from the stop in CT (Stamford). |
Stamford to bar harbor will take you close to 8 hrs. Is that what you're asking? |
|
Sturbridge Village and Plymouth Plantation would both work for you.
Boston has an aquarium, children's museum, the freedom trail, Quincy Market, and a Science Center. Also Fenway, if you are baseball fans. |

Here are some suggestions for an adult tour. If you're taking kids I'd stay at N. Conway, Winnepesaukee, and the beaches in Maine otherwise, here's the tour:
Mystic,CT - Foxwoods is about 15 miles away and is a lovely 5 star resort casino. They Also have fine spa services. Drive up 95 and stay at ocean house in Rhode Island. It's a reclaimed old hotel on the beach. Once in a life time experience. While there, take the Newport Mansion tour. Extraordinary. Continue up 95 stay in Boston - see the Boston thread - sights to see covered there. Link. http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/472125.page Continue up 95 sTay at Portdmouth NH. Very quaint, walkable. Fine dining, shopping. Shop the Kittery outlets across the bay. OR North Conway is a young family destination. It's better in winter with skiing. Otherwise there's a couple of water park amusements and hiking and boating if that's what you like. Otherwise, I would stay at Lake Winnepesaukee instead. Continue up to Bar Harbor, ME and spend a couple of nights there or any of the Maine beaches on the way. |
Oh man, I hated Duxbury kids so much growing up. |
